welcome to season 7 of FYI this season instead of tackling topics we'll discover the most common verbs in the English[Music] language I think therefore I am get ready to Think Through think on this week's episode of FYI welcome to for your English you got[Music][Music] it oh hello hello hello Migos welcome welcome to another exciting edition of FYI my Amigos and F Yi is a show where we take a look at a different topic week after week and this week we are taking a look at the verb to think because in season seven we are looking at all the essential verbs that you need to know if you noticed in the intro I taught you I think therefore I am does that ring a bell did you say Renee deart[Applause] you[Applause] say or something like this well there you go with your first expression I think therefore I am and then I said we're g to think it through if you've been listening to this series on verbs you'll notice that through means from beginning to end so what does that mean to think of it completely so that's what we're here to do with this irregular verb think thought thought and I want to take a look at this a sound because you're going to hear it a lot in English and remember I want you guys to repeat everything I say aloud and this way you won't just improve your listening with FYI but you'll also improve your speaking so I thought say it with me say it a million times if you have to say it I thought it's a very famous line from uh is it sylvette Tweety was it Tweety I taught i t a PTY cat I thought I saw a [ __ ] cat you call him pooline I believe I hate it when we change the names of characters because then I have to think of both names well the famous line is I taught i t I thought I saw obviously he has a speech impediment i tght i t a pyat and the real thing he should be saying if he spoke correctly was I thought I saw a pussycat now the thing I wanted to highlight here is thought because there are many irregular verbs that have this ending so let's review them think let's review them the way I always tell you to do it aloud every day I think about the future yesterday your turn yesterday I thought about the future and lately lately I've thought about the future so it's think thought thought but let's take a look at the word by every day I buy stocks Aus yesterday I bought I thought you bought see same sound and obviously the third column is the same but let's even try the a because those two are o u ght what about that a u HT every day I teach you things yesterday I taught you things and lately I've taught you things so what am I saying you you you ought to know you ought to know that ought sound because if you can say ought then you can pronounce a lot of words that are not just in the past but also in the third column as well the participle so Guys these are little tricks of the trade I thought no I caught you when I thought you bought I can't think of any other ones but make a list and practice it so you never say or anything con conjugation of this very useful verb to think we looked at an idiomatic expression and that was Renee deart I think therefore I am therefore you know let's define this verb to think I mean I you all know what it is bad but let's define it because we can always learn other vocabulary words when we look up so think is a verb that generally means to have a particular opinion belief look see there's a good one I know you all know the word believe but a belief is Right a conviction a belief so I believe these are my beliefs okay so good to know that Nuance is or idea about someone or something or to use the mind yeah some people don't do this to use the mind to consider reason ra or reflect reflection I believe you say so that is some good vocabulary over there so that that's the definition of the verb to think I think all right all right I'll stop with the corny jokes let's take a look at it in context because I think that's even more important than defining the verb the first one we already looked at the idea of having an opinion or belief remember that word belief the example I think she's very talented now it's not conjugated there I want you to conjugate it always how would you conjugate it I think she's very talented she's I think she's very talented now do you know a synonym for talented gifted we say see if you see a talent as a gift I love that idea behind it so I think she's very gifted I think she's very talented ask me do you think do think do you think do you think she's very talented yeah I think she's very talented she isn't very talented she isn't very very talented the next one to consider or reflect right reflect like your reflection in the mirror well to reflect is another way of saying to think about something to consider something let's look at the example I need to think about your proposal before making a decision I didn't say to I need to I need to I need to think about you think about right we don't say think in that's a common mistake I I was thinking in my vacations no I was thinking about my vacation okay to think in is very specific it's like if you ask me Alberto when you dream when you think do you think in English or think in Spanish so think about you just W to it's in a lot of songs I been thinking about you and we'll get to that in pop culture but just think of think of and think about think in you'll rarely rarely use and that's a very common mistake all right uh so I need to I need to right I need to mow the lawn I need to trim the hedges I need to whatever I need to think about your proposal before making a decision do you need to think about it do you need to think about my proposal before making your decision yeah I need to think about it all right I don't need to would be the negative I don't need to okay to remember or to recall is the next usage to remember or to recall and remember with the verb remember and remind there's a lot of confusion let's clear it up right now we have remember it's something you do by yourself I remember when I was a child nothing nobody helped me that's me I I in my mind I did it right I remember that smell it's a beautiful smell remind comes from an outside source now there are two different structur structures excuse me that you'll use with remind write them down remind me to explain that later is remind me to and the other one is you remind me of you remind me of somebody this place reminds me of a place that I uh that I was at when I was a kid I remember it well I remember so careful with that it can be quite confusing so the example with to remember or to recall I can't think of his name right now I can't think of his name right now Kenya no Kenya in Africa Kenya that's why I'm laughing can you think of his name can you think of his name no I can't think of his name we've looked at this a lot this can and can't yeah I can think of his name I can think of his name you can't think emphas you I can think of his name I can't think of his last name right so it's interesting that it's more than just that te and I've explained that in many episodes but remember look at this like a course like by the end of these 30 episodes you should be able to pronounce Canon can correctly whether you're affirming well not just can and can but many other things as well so I can't think of his name think of just think about and think of they just go together they go together like l l l ding ding ding all right the next usage is to form or have a particular idea or image in mind image pronounce it with me it's a word that I've heard image right it's it rhymes with Bridge there's an image on the bridge in my Village there's an image in the bridge in my Village okay now let's look at the example when you think of Paris tomorrow do you I didn't say do you do you think it rain tomorrow no I don't think it'll rain tomorrow no I don't think it'll rain tomorrow not easy folks not easy oh and speaking of expect I'm going to give you a killer translation right now because in Spanish you say espad for these three verbs let's see if you can translate this now this is not our translation test which remember at the end of the bonus episode we have a translation test which will really really make you sweat all right is I hope they don't expect me to wait for them did you get that right all right great job great job folks if you are following along then you are definitely learning especially if you're repeating these examples allowed the next usage and example is to direct one's mind towards someone or something with care or concern okay towards we've looked at that many times the because no one says TOS the way it's written it's like t o r DS towards right towards towards so let's see the example think about the impact of your actions on others so it means right you know think about the impact of your actions on others the next one is to devise or invent right to devise or invent the example she thought of thought remember thought bought caught she thought of a clever way to solve the problem we don't say to resolve you can say resolve but it be much more common to say to solve the mystery to solve the problem so she thought of a clever way maybe would be a good translation to solve the problem can you ask me that in a question did she think of a clever way to solve the problem did she think of did she think of a clever way to solve the problem tell me she didn't no she didn't think of a clever way to solve the problem and remember another way to say this is to come up with we looked at this in the episode on come she came up with she thought of a clever way to solve the problem and the good thing is these words just keep coming up it's true though even though this episode is not about the verb to come a couple Expressions have come up we've come across wow we've come across you should know all of these phrasal verbs that I'm giving you because we looked at them in the come episode episode and if you haven't listened to that episode well come on come on come on come on the hives lases is that how you say Hive bees they they live in a hive I remember we have an episode on bees but I always mix that word up like you know what I'm gonna look it up now Hive Kar is the word Hive Cola I don't know why I always say K menar oh I think I know why because there's a place in near Madrid called Karo so maybe that's that's probably why well hey I'm all I learn from everything guys um like you you know you see something and you learn from it right away and that's if that's because you've got your thinking caps on and there's a a good idiomatic expression that they used to use with us in school our teachers would say when it was time to focus when it was time to you know get down to business e Al Leo the teacher would say let's put our thinking caps on Las gor which means it's it's not playtime now it's time to learn but you know what teachers I beg to differ because I believe that learning time should be synonymous with play time in fact I see it with my daughter every day the more we play the more we learn do we learn when we're just saying let's look at vocabulary or do we learn and say okay I'm going to spell some letters and you write them down and then we'll see what words you write down let's see which ones you know or at the pool okay let's try every different jump and she's learning how to say Cannonball say the bom I mean that word wouldn't come up if we weren't doing things so remember to have fun keep it active you know keep your mind active and I know I don't have to tell you that because all of you are English explorers all right uh the next usage is to be engaged a lot of people talk about that that word these days engagement engagement um so it's to be engaged in thinking or contemplation the example he sat quietly thinking deeply about his future right he sat quietly careful with that word because it's not kto it's a false friend kto still so he sat still he sat quietly Ino he sat quietly thinking deeply about his future and pronounce that word with me future future ask me Sayo did he sit right because it's sit sat sat did he sit quietly thinking deeply about his future sure he was thinking it through which we'll look at in the bonus part we also looked at it in the[Music] intro I remember I learned that word did anybody get the song reference[Music] rapael I told you I learned from everything Raphael was my first SP Spanish teacher to be honest I used to write down the lyrics of his songs and I would learn imagine a little kid a seven-year-old American kid walking around saying yeah it's true but when you learn from a poet that's kind of cool let's be honest Raphael is a poet and he knows it elav so uh yes and uh the thing is we say to contemplate but it's not that common right it's not as common as saying think or think over think it through so there are many other ways to say it but to contemplate exists but the first time I heard it in Spanish and it was easy for me to understand oh contemplate to think about something for a long time right and says contemp and I said ah I got it I learned that word by process of elimination as well so keep your eyes and your ears fully open and I'm sure you guys are going to pick stuff up everywhere and make sure you get all your content in English what if you're getting news remember you can get Le let's say you you know you're into soccer the Olympics whatever the stock market you know get it in English there are many many channels awesome do it we'd love it all right let's take a look we've got a couple more examples and then we've got to wrap up and then I'm going to take a quick break and we're going to do the bonus episode I say Miss see I'm learning a lot of stuff in Spanish to weigh we say to we you have to weigh yourself just be careful wait to we I always tell people a funny way to remember it you have any Mexican friends a shout out to my brother-in-law Serio how much do you weigh we we what's your weight how much do you weigh so so here's uh here's an example of that to consider or to weigh think carefully before you answer the question think care carefully before you answer the question and the last one to hold a particular view or judgment the example I think it's a bad idea to invest in that company okay I think this is my opinion this is my judgment can you turn it into a question do you think it's a bad idea to invest in that company do you think do you think do you think so for example hey I think politicians are stealing our money do you think so that that's even an idiomatic expression which we'll look at many more in the bonus episode so do you think it's a bad idea to invest in that company yeah I think it's a bad idea to invest in that company let's take a look at some synonyms and antonyms just to have more vocabulary in our pallet and then we'll wrap up the first synonym is believe which we already um we already said it's different than belief obviously they're linked but very different the noun is a belief and the verb is to believe the next one consider you say to contemplate right to reflect reflection and to ponder that's one I used in the opening too in the first minutes of today's show and some antonyms to forget to ignore to disregard to neglect and to overlook and I love that one Overlook to overlook is oops I missed it I overlooked it is I overlooked it but to oversee is to supervise so that's weird I was overseeing the project but I overlooked a
