okay hello hello hello welcome fyers welcome to another exciting Edition give it up for you you see what I did there did you catch me I said give give it upo give it up for you FYI so there's your first look at this verb we're gonna look at today on our season 7 of FYI where we're looking at the essential verbs and all their uses and come on give I mean that is definitely a basic building block of any language and I just used it in context and I wasn't even trying believe me I just did that off the top of my head I think you say abto off the top of my head without really thinking about it too much so give it up for you show with no namers I just called you show with no namers well you know why sometimes I get confused not sometimes all the time uh but I have two different shows I have this show FYI which is a weekly show and then I have my daily radio show which is also streaming you can watch both of those in video format or vodcast as you prefer now what is the deal fyers are show with no namers and show with no namers are FYI what does that mean that means if you like learning with me here on FYI when we focus on a topic or a verb then hopefully you'll like learning with me on the show with no name where it's a little bit different same thing you know using pop culture laughing jokes singing you know you can't take that out of my classes no you can't take that away from me see I can't help it for I can't help all right I'll stop I'll stop I mean really as you guys know we learn so much from music movies pop culture really our surroundings if you want to sum that up in a different way way we learn a lot from our surroundings we also learn a lot from the intro because in each intro I like to put two or three common uses of the verb in question so today I said don't give up if you didn't know this phrasal verb you need to know it don't give up it's something I tell all my students or I tell anybody who's doing something that takes effort and time and do you want me to be honest with you anything that's worth it takes time and effort things don't just you know pop up magically so don't give up now that means don't quit then I gave you an idiomatic expression now if you're looking for more idiomatic expressions remember every week There's a bonus episode and in that it's usually around 40 minutes or so this one's usually around 30 the second one well let's just say they're 30 if I go over it's about an hour of English every week based on this verb this week's verb is to give so in the bonus part if you guys are in my Curious community on patreon you'll get access to this bonus episode now this bonus episode is a gem why you're going to look at all the phrasal verbs with give today you're going to look at all the idiomatic expressions with give we're looking at one right now and I'll give you the definition I'll give you the definition in just a moment but you can get the bonus episode you can get PDF documents where you can follow along and you can practice and you can take notes and if you're in our highest level our Interstellar students you can even get class with me every week we have a review class where we review via Zoom the most important elements of any episode now this season we're looking at verbs but in other Seasons let's say for example we're looking at the home there's an episode on English at home well then we'll look at that vocabulary plus we do all kinds of exercises and drills if you want more information if you're hungry for more uh if you're thirsty for more you can say either one no that's another thing I want you to pronounce things with me here don't just listen don't be passive okay be proactive okay because there are many points today in the show or in any of our programs here where what I do is I say I want you to say this I want you to try and say it like that or be careful with this that means jot it down take notes so if you want to join us if you want to get so much more and more importantly be in an amazing Community well you can join me over on patreon.com Alberto Alonso and I'd like to send a shout out out to all my patrons especially my Interstellar students Garmin lenina Isa Bako David Jose Maria and Edgar keep it up now those are people who don't give up speaking of the word give up and you can tell that's why each and every one of the people I just mentioned has made tremendous progress if you want to not just make progress but you want to enjoy the learning process join us on patreon.com Alberto Alonso as I said you've got a lot of different options and also guys it's a way to make sure that if you like this content well you know you keep seeing it because you know it takes a lot of time it takes a lot of effort these episodes these videos if you're watching the vodcast hello they don't come from nowhere they have to come from a seed in my head which later gets put into the computer and edited so in the end there's a lot that goes into it but if you're enjoying it if you're making the most of it and when I say making the most of it I mean repeating things allowed this way you're practicing your speaking as well well at the end of season 7 you should be a pro at least with these 30 essential verbs and you know what I'll give you a little the scoop I'll give you the scoop the scoop means the inside information right scoop is also ice cream right the scoop ice cream so I'll give you the scoop folks I have put together another 30 verbs 30 essential verbs now I don't know if I'm going to do it in season 8 or maybe I'll skip a season and do season nine but folks in the end there are going to be 60 essential verbs that you should know inside and out is that great news or what so there's the idiomatic expression to give someone the scoop what's the scoop what's the scoop oh I think I think that might be a good translation all right well let's take a look at the conjugation of this irregular verb to give every day I give money to charity charity yesterday your turn yesterday I gave money to charity and lately lately I've given money to charity now again as you'll notice if you know give gave given you won't just know in ESP but you'll know Dar you'll know and many other Expressions so think of it that way too when you learn how to conjugate the verb to go or any common irregular verb it doesn't even have to be irregular you're opening a whole world because as we know go does not just mean eat or or or be as you say in Spanish it has so many more meanings so knowing how to use it will give you the key to those meanings and I don't mean knowing how to use it written down I'm not looking for that you okay if you need to see it in your head you want to write it down do it follow along it's excellent but my biggest concern is that you repeat after me when I tell you to or when something sounds strange to you or you know you're like wait that that doesn't sound right all right and let's take a look at this verb we've already looked at an idiomatic expression we'll look at many more in the bonus episode also we've looked at a phrasal verb but let's just look at the verb to give without anything without any prepositions now the verb give means to transfer possession of something to someone else okay it can also mean to provide offer or Grant see this is why I love defining things because in the definition we find more jewy vocabulary to Grant well a grant sub H Grant all right all right all right bad joke corny corny joke hey but if it helps you remember it so to Grant somebody something I think would be we'll take a look at it as I said when we take a look at the uses and more importantly in context the examples so a great word to know so um to offer or Grant something intangible so respectable respect respect respectable respectable responsible delectable incredible do you hear something in common a there you go folks well do you know how many times I heard I've heard vegetable vegetable vegetable vegetable vegetable say it with me and if not you can always say veggies all right so something intangible like help or a promise and careful with that word I promise I swear I've heard people a promise and that's not how you pronounce that word give can be used in various contexts including physical transfer providing assistance making a presentation or causing an effect all right now let's take a look at to transfer possession she gave him the book now y she gave him the book she gave him she gave him because the H I have to go she gave him the book that's not even comfortable it's not natural to me so let me take a sip of water cuz I'm my my throat is a little bit dry ah sip hey at least I didn't take a gulp she gave him the book now that's without anything you know that's that's just what it looks like in black and white this is how I'd say it she gave him the book she gave them gave them she gave him the book ask me did she give him the book did she give him the book now the only time you would pronounce that H is when he's the important part of the question did she give him the book I told her to give it to me see him see that that's that's going to depend on your the importance what's important in your sentence what you want to highlight what you want to point out and that you'll say by in English by stressing it the the most important words in each sentence are the ones we P you know the ones that punch out and the other ones just kind of get lost if you notice so she gave let's practice all three she gave him the book did she give him the book did she give him the book yeah she gave him the book The she didn't give him the book she didn't give him the book I don't know why she didn't give him the book right ask me do you know if she gave him the book do you know do you know do you know do you know do you know do you know if she gave him the book because do you know do you know if she gave him the book yeah she gave him the book of course she gave him the book all right another way to say this to hand somebody something Mak sense Bono here I handed you the book okay the next one to provide or Supply reminds me of the classic business concept supply and demand offerta demand Supply and demand we say suministro same idea let's take a look at the example the company gives its employees health insurance now I know in Spain that's you've got it you're covered but not in the United States unfortunately so the company gives its employees health insurance okay to provide there ask me go ahead does the company give its employees health insurance yeah the company gives its employees health insurance tell me tell me G know well no the company doesn't give its employees health insurance not this one you have plenty of other perks and perks are a way of saying benefits right no benefits profits Deo I mean benefits like company car uh you know extended vacation things like that you know um so to give to provide or Supply again we're learning many other words not just the word give and at the end of the first part of the episode remember we always look at some synonyms and antonyms as well so and we're taking a look at the most common structures we just look at two just looked at two structures in the present tense the present simple in third person that is a tense you need to master and that's normal you know that's a very very common tense as OPP opposed to I would have gone if you had invited me okay gu she goes right third person simple present you need to know that one all right let's see the next one is er to present or offer okay to present or offer now I want you to look at that there because present is regalo Right present is regalo the verb is to present right now I want you to be careful here though because it is kind of a false friend I've heard people say let me present my friend to you amig right and I'm waiting for you to say ladies and Gentlemen please welcome J[Music] Maria no that like or to host a show but let's see if you guys know it let me introduce you to my friend I want to introduce you to to introduce you to I always used to laugh in the metro in Madrid the subway they say and all I'm thinking is foot platform platform foot hi nice to meet you hey you got to play with words that's what we do here all right so to present or offer let's take a look at the example he gave a speech at the conference he gave a speech at the conference gave a speech not gave a speech she gave a speech no gave a no it's a cocation I love that's that false friend oh man I've been playing that my mind works like that since I was a little kid I've been doing that all right but hey I want you guys to play with words because obviously it works because it means if you can play with words it means who's in charge you or the words aha who's running the show okay so he gave gave a speech at the conference ask me did he give a speech at the conference did he give a speech because I thought his brother was gonna did he give a speech did he did he give a speech at the conference because the did and the he is normally not important it's the speech at the conference that's important did he give a speech at the conference he got the speech conference so did he give a speech at the conference no he didn't give a speech at the conference I don't know why maybe he wasn't prepared maybe he didn't know about it another one to cause to happen or exist let's take a look at the example his joke gave her a good laugh his joke no yoke yoke is okay no joke joke okay so his joke gave her a good laugh laugh no it's laugh cough rough tough okay so to laugh his joke gave her a good laugh ask me did his joke did his joke give her a good laugh yeah his joke gave her a good laugh careful with that word laugh it's a very common word but I've heard people so is rough so is tough so is uh cough so make sure you're not pronouncing them like and you're pronouncing them like f e all right the next one to bestow or Grant to be is a very formal way of saying to Grant we already looked at right to Grant somebody something but it's also con I think of the uh of Aladdin you say Aladin we say Aladdin I grant you three wishes right when you rub I'm a Genie in a Bottle baby got to rub me the right way honey I'm a you know I know thank you thank you I'll be here all week all right so the judge gave him a second chance I gotta take a deep breath no no way I'm not doing it it's uncomfortable the judge gave him a second chance gave him the judge gave him a second chance ask me did the judge give him a second chance see that he did he did he give him a second chance did she did she give him a second chance did she did she did he did she so did he did she you need to know those they gotta roll off your tongue okay so did the judge give him a second chance yeah the judge gave him a second chance remember the judge is a wh and the jury are usually well that's usually citizens uh I I got to be be honest I've never had to do jury duty but there are some people I remember in New York some friends of mine who were always doing jury duty I mean jury duty is when you have to go and you have to uh deliberate on a case I don't have you guys ever done jury duty it's called judge uh excuse me it's called jury duty and it reminds me the expression what do you judge and jury the next one is to yield or produce now careful with the word produce to but also produce does anyone remember what that one means if I say they produce produce well produce is fresh food we looked at it in our Supermarket episode give it a listen very it's good to know food the home I mean this is stuff we all have in common maybe you're not as interested in Harley-Davidson as you are in you know knowing what's around your home so it's a ve very useful episodes those ones so to yield or produce and uh yield is also what a crop does unaka oh uh the the the crops yielded a lot of tomatoes also to yield we looked at it in our cars episode I can tell you when we looked at each thing here as you can see yield is so that's a really good word to know if somebody says yield and you don't yeah you could get yourself in some serious trouble all right uh so let's take a look at the example as always I can explain it until kingdom come but the important part here is that you guys get it and you know how to use it apple trees give fruit in the fall okay they produce they yield I just said CA right so apple trees now the apple trees well I can but then I'm talking about specific ones so the apple trees those are the ones I have the ones the apple trees in my yard the apple tree when we say the now we're talking about specific ones so in this case there's no definite article apple trees in it's like when people say the life is crazy no no it's not one it's life it's a general thing life life is crazy right Life is Beautiful not the life it's a common mistake because you tend to use that definite article in Spanish when you're speaking in general we don't okay so apple trees give fruit in the fall ask me please do apple trees give fruit in the fall do they trees remember we don't keep saying apple trees in a conversation then they turn to say yeah they give fruit in the fall do they give a lot of fruit do they do they do they I do they no did they again these are the basic structures and when you know them when they just roll off your tongue you've got this man you have definitely got it all right let's move on to a sign or to a tribute is another usage to a sign or to a tribute okay to ASAT I think you would say in Spanish they gave her the title of manager n manager they gave her the title of manager ask me did they give her give her is Giver right did they give her the title of manager yeah they gave her the title of manager Deo no they didn't they didn't give her the ti title give her give her give her they didn't give her the title they gave the title to someone else okay the next one is to provide or issue issue instructions no instructions instructions the teacher gave clear instructions for the assignment remember homework is uncountable I have a lot of homework I have a lot of homework tonight right now if you want to make it countable homework assignments not necessary but if you'd like to homeworks you should know that if you've been listening to all these episodes so the teacher gave clear instructions for the assignment let's say the teacher is a guy go did he give clear instructions for the assignment did he did he give him did he give clear instructions yeah he gave clear instructions the next one to sacrifice or dedicate this makes sense she gave her life to save others she gave her she gave her life to save others ask me did she give her life to save others did she give her life to save others oh yeah she gave her life to save others and the last usage is to make a donation okay so to give to I gave to Red Cross I gave to as I said before a charity right a charity you can say an NGO but it's just a lot easier to say charity it's no thanks charity we're very pragmatic people when it comes to speaking at least so they gave generously to the charity ask me did they give generously to the charity did they did they did they give generously to to the charity yeah they gave generously to the charity all right we'll take a look at some synonyms and antonyms and then we're going to wrap up but you guys if you're playing along if you're repeating this keep it up don't give up I hope you'll join us too in the bonus episode Never Going To Give You Up of course we're going to look at that song and many others in the pop culture part but first some synonyms over here the first one is to donate as we said it's a regular verb let's let's say the past tense and the past participle donated donated right you have three sounds when it comes to regular verbs I walked at the endings un I agreed un and I donated Ed so those are your three sounds there donated did you donate did you did you donate yeah I donated to offer also a regular verb offered offered offer offered hear the difference offered the next one is to present we said not pronounced exactly the same as present the next one is provide provided provided also a regular verb and granted which I think that's a really good one because it's also used in the expression to take for granted to not value something enough so antonyms to take that's one of the verbs we've looked at let's see if you know how to conjugate it every day I take things into account Tom yesterday yesterday I took things into account lately lately I've taken things into account the next one receive I received your email we always know we can replace it with got right I received esum not they the next one's keep got to know this one every day I keep secrets yesterday your turn yesterday I kept secrets and lately let's lately she's she has contos she's Kept Secrets the next one every day I withhold information I hope you don't not from your English teacher every day I withhold information yesterday I withheld information and lately I've withheld information and the last one is declined declined and that one is in the D category so my Amigos if you have gotten this far excellent job we looked at a lot of different structures a lot of great vocabulary and we're going to look at a lot more in the bonus episode of this week's FYI
