out on let's take a look at the intro as I said we're looking at the verb turn and we already said it's never or it's it turn and in the intro I put turn into that is probably the most common phrasal verb well no there are many turn on Okay one of the many common phrasal verbs that you'll hear all the time nonstop and I'm talking about turn into conver in to turn into man he really turns into a monster when he's hungry perfect example Dr Jackal turned into Mr Hyde when you freeze water it turns into ice right a caterpillar goes into a cocoon and turns into fill in the blank a butterfly so use examples say it aloud because it's not just turn it's turn into we put it together right to turn into turned into so let's practice it I want you guys remember throughout this I want you to practice aloud because this can be a listening exercise or it can be a speaking exercise but that's in your hands so I turn into a monster turn into Thea I turn into a monster when I don't eat right and he turned into he turned into a really mean guy say to turn into turned into turned into practice it until you put them together all the time and a little mistake that I hear quite often with this one is I turned into or a couple months ago my do my daughter turned into five no in this case it's just turned she turned five okay compete is to turn not to turn into and then I said don't turn a blind eye it's a great idiomatic expression and we'll look at many more in the bonus episode to turn a blind eye and that literally means to look the other way you say aist G so let's take a look at the definition of the verb turn turn is a versatile verb it's a versatile verb a versatile verb in English with multiple meanings and uses which we'll take a look at right now generally it means to move or to cause to move in a circular Direction around an Axis or a Center Point let's take a look at some examples and let's also play with our English here all right so it's really important that you repeat the examples and if I tell you ask it in a question that you're able to do that and quickly and allowed okay so the first one is to rotate or spin spin you know that one from your spinning class at the gym to rotate rot I think that's pretty easy she turned the door knob and opened the door she turned right she turned and obviously the door knob is the thing you use to open the door you say buo or something like that I believe the door knob she turned the door knob and opened the door ask me hio ISO I don't bomo is that the word did she did she turn the door knob yeah she turned the door knob and opened the door it wasn't locked it was unlocked remember doors can be locked or unlocked another one please turn the key to start the engine now I think a lot of cars these days you don't even have to use a key uh cars are too smart for me these days which by the way we have an FYI episode on cars if you want to learn the basics also you'll find it in my book English everywhere there's an episode excuse me well an episode and a chapter because an episode of audio remember this book along with all my books come with audio you can get my books wherever fine books are sold that's Amazon Casa de Libro the first book is called uh English everywhere the one I'm showing you if you're watching the video podcast hello to all our Interstellar students again then you've got after English everywhere I got to think of this this book is the milk then you've got this book is the milk too then after that I came out with English on the go it's about learning as we travel in different English-speaking cities and my latest book this book is the [ __ ] if you guys have not gotten any my any of my books and you like the way I teach well then you'll love the way I teach in my books as I said they come with audio they're usually very visual so you can remember things because I know the power of hearing something or seeing it and how important that is in the learning process when it comes to remembering it so that don't don't underestimate the power of seeing things that's why I always urge people if you're going to join our our community I I urge you to join the Superstar level because then you get not just the podcast but you get the PDF documents and you can follow along now if you I have to choose one and it's uh should I say it aloud or follow along I would say say it aloud but if you can do both great that's wonderful because then you can check it you can also take notes so please turn the key to start the engine okay the ignition to we call it the ignition of the car the next one is to change direction so at the next intersection turn left now you can also say make a left but for house turn left or make a left so at the next intersection turn left all right the next one is turn right at the traffic light that's a very logical word you say seapo we say traffic light right the next one is to change into a different state or condition so the leaves turn yellow in the fall I always thought that's a great way to call it the fall why leaves fall another way to say it is autumn aono autumn right so now I'll I'll tell you something if you didn't know this about changing the clocks spring forward fall back spring forward fall back spring is spring is also so spring forward fall back fall is but also fall as oono as we just said so it reminds you in the spring I have to move it forward in hour right and in the fall I've got to move it back this is a an ageold milenario trick now I know your phone does it automatically but back in the days where our phones didn't think for us and we thought for ourselves well that was uh that was kind of an important thing for us you know so the leaves turn yellow in the fall oh and the Four Seasons the Four Seasons we just said um Autumn Fall same one we've got winter we've got summer and we've got spring and if you remember spring forward fall back you'll always know that play on words this and you'll know which way to set your clocks so the leaves turn yellow in the fall ask me do the leaves do the it's not D do the do the leaves because it's not important the do the do the Le no no do the there it's the leaves and yellow and fall I think those are the key words right do the leaves turn yellow in the fall I I I didn't do that on purpose but why in English we highlight the important words in a sentence do the leaves turn yellow in the fall yeah they do if you want to practice short answers or yeah leaves in general turn yellow in the fall all right the next one his face turned red turned red because his face turned red with embarrassment okay do you know how to say it there's a verb for this sonan he blushed right to turn red or to blush I think if you wear makeup ladies you'll know the word blush okay it also means to turn red so his face turned red with embarrassment ask me did his face did his face turn red with embarrassment yeah his face turned red with embarrassment the next usage is to change the position or orientation of something so turn the page to read the next chapter in my book English everywhere hey I'm doing a lot of plugs today plugs is B right to sell something to plug something but hey I'm serious the books are worth their weight in gold so um let's see the example I've got for you the the next one she turned the photograph over to see the back the photograph now you can say picture I think it's a lot easier okay remember chapter in a book you say capito and an episode in a series right and in since my book as I said has audio that would be the episode the chapter would be in the book it's one of those false friends all right let's see to switch or change something on or off and this can be considered a phrasal verb turn off the lights when you leave the room now the British say switch off you know why to turn as and switch as interruptor so they both make sense I guess they had switches and we had these dimmers right if you think about it each one is an action turn off the lights when you leave the room in British English let's see if you can imitate some British English app switch off the lights when you leave the room switch off the lights when you leave the room and in American English can you turn on the TV can you turn it on turn it on and turn it off okay and while we're at it turn it up turn it down yeah turn it on turn it off turn it up turn it down now let me tell you something switch doesn't work like that switch it on switch it off and then it's turn it on turn it down down uh excuse me turn it or uh up turn it down getting all confused with my switches and my knobs oh a knob is something you turn we talked about turning the door knob hey we're looking at some really interesting ideas remember if you think of words as ideas they come alive right a word is a is a two-dimension a one-dimensional thing it's on a page right but you can take an idea and play with it and flip it around so can you turn on can you can you turn on the TV turn on yeah I'll turn it on no problem the next one is to reach a particular age or time I said this one before this one's not turn into it's a mistake I've heard she will turn 30 next week how would you ask me that question so let me give you the answer she will let me contract it because that's always more natural she'll turn 30 next week when will she turn 30 when will sheas there huh when will she turn 30 she'll turn 30 next week did you get it right Hallelujah Hallelujah Hallelujah the next example is when the clock turns midnight we'll celebrate do you remember what this is called this holiday this is called New Year's Eve right New Year's Day is the first New Year's Eve is the 31st right I think we looked at that in our Time Square episode and the same goes for Christmas Christmas Eve you say no Christmas Eve is the 24th of December Christmas day is the 25th same thing we say the same thing with the the Christmas holiday and with the um the new year right and that's a You2 song Who on New Year's Day New Year's Day all right folks let's take a look at the next usage to adopt a new or different role activity or way of life okay let's take a look at it after retiring or after he retired you can say it either way he turned to painting right maybe would be a good translation he turned to painting to turn to not turn into to turn into right so after retiring he turned to painon now how would you say what did he do after after retiring or after he retired or after his retirement and that's really knowing a word because the verb okay he is going to retire now he's retired he's really enjoying retirement suano you see then you don't just know the word retire but you really get the idea behind retire oh Ando or something like that I love that jingle if you haven't noticed a retreat my mother likes to go on religious Retreats all right let's take a look at another example of changing to a different role or activity or way of life she turned from being a lawyer to becoming a teacher and there you wouldn't say to turn into a teacher again it means changing a bigger change think about ice and water right even though it's the same thing it doesn't look the same so she turned from being a lawyer to becoming a teacher hey I think that's pretty good she's not going to make as much money but I think uh she's going to get a lot more job satisfaction the next one is to bend or fold something now to bend or fold I think you say do to bend or fold let's take a look at some examples okay remember to repeat them aloud with me turn the collar up if you're cold and the collar that's an interesting word right but the collar is part of a shirt if you don't know this it's because you haven't listened to the FYI episode on fashion there's an episode where we go through all different kinds of clothes and accessories and jewelry and uh I've also got an episode where you can find that in English everywhere an episode SL chapter which is called Beautiful People and I don't remember what chapter of the book it is but it basically deals with personality types how do we describe people physically um you know all kinds of stuff even the the basic mistake of what does he look like what does he say it with me what does he look like he has blonde hair what does he look like what's he like what's he like oh he's a nice guy what does he look like oh well he's got a beard so make sure you don't mix those up that's a very common mistake now I know it's a mistake that my students don't make because from time to time we go over these in class all right the next one turn the edges of the dough to seal it turn the edges Los Boris also remember to have an edge means to have an advantage right if you learn English with me you're going to have an edge a competitive Advantage so in this case it's literally turn the edges of the dough laasa to seal it and remember in our money episode D is another way of saying past right he doesn't have any dough but in this case we're talking about literally dough turn the edges of the dough to seal it I guess they're making meat pies imp banadas is anybody getting hungry here so doe it's also the sound Homer Simpson makes do oh and by the way there's an FYI episode on The Simpsons and I think we've got so many different episodes and this season as you know we're taking a look at verbs we're going to take a look at the top 30 most common verbs in the English language and next season we might do verbs again because I found another 30 that are worth knowing and it seems like you guys are really enjoying this all right the next one over here oh let me tell you a little joke I need the dough what does that mean that can mean two different things NE pasta and it also can mean I need the D need all right the next one is to cause someone to become a specified way the news turned him Le I think the news turned him very sad well I've got some advice for you don't watch the news I'm telling you it it's the worst it is fear fear fear death and so I get it I get it if you don't want to turn sad if you don't want to get depressed don't watch the news the next one the comedian's jokes turned the mood light and cheerful okay it made it a specific way the mood is the comedians jokes turn the mood light and cheerful cheerful but don't right and the last usage is to change one's Focus or attention to something and that's the one I said let's turn to this verb now right remember at the beginning I said to focus on to so this is let's turn our attention to the next topic let's turn our attention to the next topic this is something you would say if you were giving a presentation which by the way there's an FYI episode on presentations and the last one she turned her eyes away from the accident do you remember do you remember the expression aist she turned a blind eye remember we're going to take a look at a lot of idiomatic expressions with this verb we're also going to take a look at more phrasal verbs and of course we'll look at it in pop culture and then I'm going to put you to the test to see if you were able to turn it around and really get to know this tricky verb or at least pronounce it correctly say it out loud turn turn all right so I hope you'll join us in the bonus episode before we get going let me give you some synonyms and antonyms and then I hope you'll join us in that episode we're going to have a blast thank you so much for being with us as well my goes whether you're a patron or whether you just catch the free episode every week thank you if you haven't gone and rated the show do that because that helps a lot as well thank you thank you thank you from the bottom of my heart some synonyms for turn rotate it's a regular verb he rotated the Earth rotates around the Sun the next one spin you know that one one that's a one that's used in the gym here all the time twist twist that's a song come on baby let's do the twist take me by my little hand and go like this the next one is to revolve the next one is Pivot any basketball players might know that one pivot and some antonyms to stay to remain to straighten to make straight right to straighten to continue and last but not least to hold so my Amigos that's the end of today's first episode on turn I sure hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of this week's FYI oh
