welcome to season 7 of FYI this season instead of tackling topics we'll discover the most common verbs in the English language you'll never say this show is nothing to write home about get ready to write things down on this week's episode of FYI welcome to for your info English you got[Music][Applause][Music] it hello hello welcome fyers welcome welcome to another exciting edition of FYI and as always Amigos this is where we play this is where we laugh and this is where we learn Eng English but most importantly I need you guys to repeat what I'm saying aloud and try and sound as much like me as you possibly can hey it's what I do when I'm listening to you guys speak Spanish and I hear something that hm that sounds weird well maybe I should take a look at that myself and uh and say it aloud and this way it doesn't feel like a stranger I always say new words new pronunciations new structures they're not they're not our enemies they're like people we haven't met yet and we just need to familiarize ourself with those people and a nice round of applause to all my FYI who are here every week learning with us and laughing with us here on the show as you know we look at a different verb every week but also in the first six seasons we look at a bunch of different topics as well so you have over 180 topics that we've looked at from Las Vegas to the Eiffel Tower to Everything Under the Sun and if you haven't listened to those you know where to get them you can get them wherever you get podcasts that is Apple podcasts Spotify um I box I know that's a very popular one in Spain as well but today get ready to write things down and I'm using that because today's verb is to write but more importantly what do I want you to do to repeat what I say aloud all right so let's start with the pronunciation of this word it's an irregular verb and it's write wrote written right which sounds exactly like correcto am I right yes you're right you are absolutely right okay well then you know how to say it okay is it right when I write that again if we associate sounds then we'll always say it correctly and my problem here isn't really with right today but it's with the third column the participle so every day I write my name yesterday your turn I wrote my name and lately I've written my name did you say writen all right well that's the common mistake I hear a lot of times I hear students say I have writen get it out of your head it doesn't exist it's WR wrote written and that's all she wrote yes sir to Amigos hey don't forget we'll learn other idiomatic expressions in the bonus episode we look at phrasal verbs we look at idiomatic expressions we look at the verb in music and movies and we wrap it all up with a translation test where I make sure that you really got it that you've got it perfectly that you've got it down pat but just remember that bonus episode is exclusively for patrons for people in my community you can go to my community and check it out there and Ard all right if you want more information about how you can get more go to patreon.com Alberto Alonso let's take a quick look at the intro now that we know how to pronounce the word because in the intro I usually include a phrasal verb and an expression or two expressions or two phrasal verbs and this one let's see if you caught it you'll never say this show is nothing to write home about do you know this idiomatic expression well ask me how the movie was how was the movie Alberto did you do it aloud do it how was the movie how was was how was how was the movie how was how was the movie it was nothing to write home about does that in context and the way I reacted make sense you say in Spanish it's not uh it's not um I I wouldn't launch um fireworks or Rockets hey I love it it's a great one too but our equivalent is it's nothing to write home about so I want you to imagine because if sometimes if we imagine ourselves in this situation then we'll remember the idiomatic expression I'm at Campo and I'm writing to my folks and saying hey mom and dad today we had a great day at I um learned how to do a backflip in the pool and then blah blah blah blah well if it's nothing to write home about so think about it that way that I like yours more to be honest I love the goes thing but when we see when we say something was not at all what you expected it let you down we say it was nothing to write home about it's usually used in the negative we don't say oh that was something to write home about normally what used in the negative it's nothing to write home about and then I looked at one of the most common ones and that is to write right to write and this is um this is to write down it's a little bit different because if you're writing a book you're not writing down so writing down is usually something short you know a phone number write down my number right you say my mobile we say my number me numo write down my number write it down write it down again you should know this one I know you guys should know this one to write down why because I tell you to write things down all the time but did you know it's nothing to write home about well that's another great one you can add to your Arsenal let's take a look at the definition of the verb to write the verb write means to form letters makes sense words or symbols emojis these days right on a surface and I want everybody to pronounce this word with me no surface surface sir surface on a Surface such as paper a screen or another medium using a Peno a pencil a keyboard or other tools hey who knows maybe you like to engrave things with a hammer any engravers in the house and I think to engrave is GRA it also means to compose text compose componet to compose text such as letters emails stories and documents as well as to communicate in written form and I think we're leaving out a big one to record history right gra and I want to look at the word also email in Spanish you say email in English we say email right email so let's take a look at some of these uses and some examples the important part here is the examples folks I want you guys to say them aloud and again this way at the end of this episode you won't just Master the verb to write but you'll have mastered a lot of different structures because our first one is in the present tense in third person the second one is in the past tense I see a future tense as well so remember that in each episode aside from practicing the verb in question you're practicing tons of different structures and iation things all throughout the episode but again it's in your hands all right so the example of forming letters or words on a Surface the first one she writes her name she writes her name on the paper right every morning she writes her name writes her she writes her name on the paper ask me does she write her name on the paper does she does she write write her name on the paper yeah she writes her name on the paper Theo she doesn't no no she never does she doesn't write her name on the paper write her name I'm not pronouncing that H there okay she writes her name on the paper does she write her name on the paper yeah she does no she doesn't you can also practice short answer but I think it's better to practice putting all our words together aloud the next one is in the past he wrote a note on the board hey I'm a poet and I didn't even know it he wrote a note on the board ask me did he write a note on the board did he did he write a note on the board yeah he wrote a note on the board tell me no he didn't write a note on the board in why didn't he why didn't he write a note on the board did you get it right well those those negative questions are hard a lot of students make mistakes with those negative questions right did he write a note on the board well I don't know and the the indirect question noo why didn't he why shouldn't he why wouldn't he the next one is to compose texts letters or documents and remember text because we live in the um the email the the texting World these days in fact I know a lot of people who haven't written something down with a pen in ages and I have to say my handwriting has gotten a lot worse and me H my handwriting ISO no my handwriting oh man your handwriting is sloppy it seems like a doctor who's writing a prescription they're Infamous for having sloppy handwriting we also call it penmanship handwriting or penmanship and it's how you write like calligraphy is obviously beautiful so but some people don't really have um very good not not writing skills because one thing is right maybe you're a good wrri but your penmanship isn't great all right so uh some examples with texts letters or documents documents documents documents I'll I'll write a letter to my friend I'll I'll write a I'll write a letter to my friend ask ask me will you will you write a letter to your friend will you write a letter to your friend yeah I'll write a letter to my friend I won't I won't write a letter to my friend let's see if you got it why won't you why won't you write a letter to your friend why won't you why won't you write a letter to your friend because I already wrote him a letter last week the next one the author author author awesome the author wrote a new novel last year the author wrote a new novel last year ask me did the author write a new novel last year did he did she did they if we don't know did they write a new novel last year yeah the author wrote a new novel last year Deo no the author didn't write a new novel last year the next usage to communicate via written means written we omit that glot te there right right so we say written it was written now Mas written Mountain Certain Fountain is written written Bruna Wren okay please write to me when you get there please write to me when you get there now I've got a question could I say please write me when you get there absolutely isn't that awesome Hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah so please write me when you get there or write to me to or SE to make a little note there in your PDF documents just so you know because I can say in an email I'm writing you about our meeting or I'm writing to you about our meeting both are correct all right the next one he writes emails emails he writes emails to his boss is I said not his he writes emails to his boss every day ask me does he write emails to his boss every day does he does he write emails to his boss every day yeah he always writes emails to his boss he doesn't write emails to his boss every day ask me why why doesn't he write emails to his boss every day why doesn't he why doesn't he write emails to his boss every day well he prefers to talk to him in person the next one is to record information I already said earlier to record history our own history we record graad and thanks to people writing things down initially on caves and chronicling everything um what we're able to know about our past right now uh let's look at the examples write down the phone number so you don't forget it okay now in this case you wouldn't say write because write now is so this would be to write down right write down the phone number so you don't forget it okay and remember I asked you for your number before and now I've got your number you know this idiomatic expression I've got your number buddy it's I know how you work I've got your number so write down the phone number so you don't forget it how would you say did you did you write down the phone number yeah I wrote it down I wrote it down I wrote it downo I wrote it down all right the next one she writes the minutes of every meeting she writes the minutes of every meeting I guess this is the secretary when you're having a meeting ask me does she write the minutes of every meeting does she does she write the minutes of every meeting yeah she always writes them down in her journal right and a journal is something you write in every day a log where you keep a record of something so she writes the minutes of every meeting she doesn't write the minutes of every meeting she doesn't she doesn't write them ask me why why doesn't she write did you say it right why doesn't she write the minutes of every meeting if you said it right great job I'm telling you guys today aside from practicing a lot of different structures and the verb today we're working on those negative questions make a list right practice with all the modal verbs I haven't eaten why haven't you eaten I didn't go there why didn't you go there I can't read why can't you read I wasn't here yesterday why weren't you here yesterday I didn't hear what you said why didn't you hear what I said right until you got it down perfectly for some reason the students say why you didn't why why you shouldn't yes why shouldn't you why didn't you so if you're one of those students make a note and practice them aloud the next one is to EXP Express or describe something in words okay so he wrote an essay about his summer vacation does the word essay ring a bell ins yeah there you go in fact somebody who writes essays is an essayist right we already said uh a novelist we said an author um you've also got a screenwriter a playright a screenwriter writes for the big screen a playright writes plays so a lot of different writers as well a journalist Pista so he wrote an essay about his summer vacation is his ask me did he did he write an essay about his summer vacation did he did he do it yeah he wrote an essay did he write an essay about his summer vacation de no he didn't write an essay about his summer vacation he didn't write one ask me why why didn't he write an essay about his summer vacation why didn't he I thought he was going to do it he told me he was going to do it the next usage is to engage in creative writing such as stories or poetry we just talked about all the different kinds of writers you'll find let's look at some examples she loves to write poems in her free time poems not poems poems poems she likes she loves to write poems in her free time yeah remember before I taught you I'm a poet and I didn't even know it how do you ask me that does she love to write poems in her pre time in her free time does she love does she love to write poems in her free time I've heard people say poems but it sounds really weird poems poems hey I'm trying to simplify it for you here she loves to write poems in her free time she loves poetry she is a poet the next one the playright we just said a playright is somebody who writes plays a screenwriter writes for the screen a novelist writes novels the playwright wrote a successful Broadway show how can you ask me that did the playwright write a successful Broadway show yeah the playwright wrote a successful Broadway show he make a no no I'm sorry the playright didn't write a successful Broadway show ask me if I know Broadway do you know if the playwright wrote a successful Broadway show all right folks we are up in the anti I hope you guys are keeping up because we're looking at we've probably looked at about 30 or 40 translations already with the affirmative sentences the negative ones the indirect questions the direct questions and the negative questions and this is how you really practice so make sure you're doing it aloud and you'll be making the most of this this season season seven that we're in right now and season8 we're going to look at 60 of the most common verbs so by the time we're done with these two seasons you guys should be experts not only in these verbs but in the most common tenses out there tempos bbes the next one is to work as a professional writer examples he writes for a popular magazine he writes for a popular magazine remember popular o is you ask me does he write for a popular magazine yeah he writes for a popular magazine how do you tell me no he doesn't write for a popular magazine ask me why negativa why doesn't he write for a popular magazine well he never went on an interview that's why he doesn't write for a popular magazine the next one the present perfect continu we haven't looked at this one yet today I'm going to contract it do it with me she's been writing scripts for TV shows for over a decade okay reminds me of the idiomatic expression to stick to the script A you sayen stick to the script so she's been writing she has she's been writing scripts for TV shows for over a decade how can you ask me tough one how long has she been writing scripts for how long how long will I how long has she been writing scripts for she's been writing scripts for over a decade right prente perfectto Contino she hasn't been writing novels she's been writing scripts so practice again with the negative with the affirmative and the last usage to be the author of a legal no legal legal or official document examples the lawyer no laer or la la my wife said liar moso lawyer lawyer the lawyer wrote the contract for the New Deal another way to say to write a contract is to draft right we're going to draft draft a contract the lawyer wrote the contract for the New Deal asked me did the lawyer write the contract for the New Deal remember when there's a question I want to hear that doubt in your voice did the lawyer write the contract for the New Deal yeah the lawyer wrote the contract for the New Deal he didn't write the contract for next year's deal ask me why why didn't he write the contract for next year's deal and the last one he wrote his will before traveling abroad abroad or overseas and to write your will does that sound familiar this is what you do when you're going to die and you want to give away your possessions you want to leave them to someone well you put it in your will the full name is your last will in Testament but we call it your will so if you write a will a he wrote his will before traveling abroad ask me did he did he write his will before traveling abroad yeah he wrote his will before traveling abroad all right how did you guys do I'm sure you did a wonderful job and remember if you want to follow along you can join us on patreon and you can have all those examples so you can take notes let's wrap up this first part with some synonms and antonyms the first one is compose and that's a regular verb so it's[Music] composed I composed it composed it right the next one to pen yeah pen is bigraph but also who penned that article who penned that right to pen to jot down this one's a synonym for to write down right reminds me of the expression the pen is mightier than the sword right no sword sword jot that one down the next one to scribble and this is kind of what a kid does or a doctor when they're writing a prescription you scribble or something you say something like that and the last one to record and this is more to record to make a record of something all right and some antonyms to erase erase you know that one that's what we do with a pen what do we do with a computer we delete no delete the next one suppress it's a regular verb he suppressed his emotions he suppressed it tit he suppressed it forget okay this is an irregular verb every day I forget things yesterday I forgot things and lately I've forgotten things and the last antonym is blank there you go my Amigos that is the verb to write I hope you guys will join us
