welcome to season 7 of FYI this season instead of tackling topics we'll discover the most common verbs in the English language I mean business on this week's show if you know what I mean we'll find out the many meanings of mean on this week's episode of FYI welcome to for your info English you got[Music][Applause][Music] it hello hello hello fyers welcome to another exciting edition of FYI and today we mean business signio what that doesn't make any sense in Spanish signio we mean business no it you can't translate things literally right for if the flies poras moscas that means nothing in English so you got to remember some things you could just copy and paste and translate and other things you can't because you're just going to confuse people uh perfect example is my bestseller I have a book that's a best seller it's called this book is the milk now in Spain you guys get it this is the bomb this is the [ __ ] but we don't say this is the milk so the number one reaction I had in the United States from my friends was hey Alberto congratulations I don't get it I'm like milk like what what is the milk thing and I'm like oh right right right that's a Spanish idiomatic expression that means that it's awesome it's the bomb it's like I always say in English those little nuances they mean everything if you're [ __ ] no if you're the [ __ ] it isas so a nice round of applause for my FYI who are the[ __ ] and the expression to mean business means you're serious you're not joking around okay I mean business if you tell this to your girlfriend maybe it means you want to get more serious maybe you're going to propose if you say you you say this same expression to your boss you're letting them know I'm taking this very seriously I mean business and I know all of you mean business especially my patrons the ones who are in my community the ones who get a bonus episode every week with tons of amazing content including phrasal verbs idiomatic expressions like the one we just looked at we'll even look at it in pop culture and at the end a little test to make sure that you got it and you got it down Patos to have it down pat great one I know we've looked at that one before and as you know in every episode other vocabulary will come up we don't just talk about the verb mean because when we're talking will other words phrasal verbs come up so be ready to take notes now if you have the PDFs if you're one of my patrons which all of you get the PDF docu no no uh not all of you sorry I misspoke the um the super duper students the uh Interstellar students and also the Superstar students but the star students you don't get the PDFs you just get bonus episode anyway I don't want to bore you with the details all I have to tell you is you are missing out if you want more if you want to learn with extra content every week if you want to be in class with me and also have access to over 2,000 posts that's a lot of content I've been creating in the past almost five years well then go to patreon.com Alberto Alonso and I'd like to send a shout out right now to all my Interstellar students the ones who are in class with me every week keep up the great work Adrian Carmen lenina Issa bco David Jose Maria Ariel and Edgard I am extremely proud of you and you know that I mean business when I say that so keep it up all right now let's get into this word mean we already said it's part of an expr ex many Expressions as we'll see later on but what if I told you the mean temperature in alia is 23 degrees I'm making up the number okay the mean temperature does that mean rude does that mean meino right because that's also mean that's another usage so no in that case mean is average the mean temperature the mean grade in our class L media right promeo I think you say as well just be careful with that word average aage I said average average the average temperature or the mean temperature so there's another usage right mean as an adjective and the other one I just said if you're mean it's the opposite of nice somebody who is nice or kind you say sympo AG is mean so don't be mean don't be a he's a mean he's a real meanie but you can just say mean don't be mean so yeah oh and means with an s money I'd like to go on vacation to uh Japan with my daughter and my wife but I don't have the means right now Los medos so this is a really really rich word and we're going to take a look at all the other meanings right the meanings you would say in Spanish so wow this is I mean we're just looking at it right here and we're seeing that it's got a lot of uses it's an irregular verb so every day I mean business I don't know what to say every day I mean business in my classes yesterday do you know it yesterday I meant business lately or so far right so far see right so so far this month I've meant business what's the good news mean meant me what I recommend is if you've got the PDF right now cross out the a it's me it's meant so meant okay that's what I meant so we just looked at a lot of meanings but we're going to take a look at them in context because I think that's the best way as always and I urge each and every one of you who's listening to this right now to repeat aloud I cannot stress how important it is if you want to work on your speaking I mean why you learn English just to be a better listener I don't think so yeah you want to be able to understand everything but you also want to be able to answer so that is your job Amigos I can't do that part for you I can only cheer you on anim Mar so the first one is to intend convey or Express right to convey transm so uh let's look at some some examples I think it's the best way right what do you mean by that comment get the Fe right we wouldn't say what do you want to say k is the feet that's that would be the literal remember before we said you can't do literal translations not all the time it doesn't work like that well that's one where just doesn't sound natural in English what do you what are you you could say what are you trying to say this careful with that false friend because to pretend what are you trying to say what do you mean what do you or what you what what do you mean what do you what do you what do you mean when do you when do you right when do you how do you how do you where right and that's I always tell you to pay attention to that you know what changes in a sentence the verb right usually that I'm going to or she's going so once you know the part that changes learn the part that doesn't change as one learn it together the example I always use have you ever been to you just have to think of the city have you ever been to have you ever been to have you ever been to have you ever been to have you ever been to uh just got to remember the city you just just need to know beforehand have you ever been to and how do you learn it by practicing it by saying it not just reading it saying it over and over and over until you can't say it wrong your mouth won't do it your brain won't do it they'll say have you ever been to have you ever been to so what do you mean by that comment I mean okay I mean the next one I didn't mean to hurt your feelings no I didn't mean to hurt your feelings can you turn it into a question for me did you mean to hurt my feelings I hope you didn't mean to to hurt my feelings no no no I I never mean to hurt people's feelings the last thing I would ever want to do is hurt somebody's feelings I promise I don't mean to do it right I don't mean to interrupt you I don't mean to here's a funny one I don't mean to be mean you know what I would say there well then don't so I didn't mean to hurt your feelings I want you to be careful too with the word hurt there okay I didn't mean to no to I didn't mean to hurt your feelings hurt I didn't mean to hurt your feelings okay did you did you mean to hurt my feelings no of course I didn't mean to hurt your feelings I would never do that on purpose on purpose no purpose purpose purpose okay another usage to signify or represent okay it denotes it refers to something specific signif examples the red light means means stop right the yellow one does too but people don't seem to remember that it means slow down or stop not speed up so the red light means stop now how would you ask me that question what does what does what does the red light mean well the red light means stop not a stop I think more of no no because sounds like oh stop stop it's not a stop it's stop please stop so the red light means stop what does the red light mean oh come on everybody knows everybody knows the red light means stop does everybody know does everybody know that that the red light means stop and the green light means go I think everybody knows that's one of the first things you learn so again there's no mystery here mean business doesn't make sense in Spanish but these kind of mean they kind of make sense okay next one what does this word mean what does this word mean what does what what do what is what is what does the word mean I don't know what it means maybe he knows what it means I don't I don't know I have no idea what it means but he might know he might know I might go I will probably go so why I might go I might join you later I might study English later if I get some time might might might I want you there's your homework put the word might into your vocabulary you might find that it will come in handy I mean that's not a fun it's not an easy word to say in any language probably probably you sound like Daffy Duck despicable not you I mean anybody when I say you I mean the collective you not you listener obviously so what does this word mean I don't know it means the next one to have a consequence or a result and I want you to pronounce the word result with me why you don't know how many times I've heard people say right result we're not really happy with your results poor your your results are poor your grades are[Laughter] poor all right and careful with the pronunciation again result result result let's take a look at some examples missing the train means we will be late right ask me does missing the train no in eng right so missing the train means we'll be late right will we will will be late always contracted okay can you ask it in a question will missing the train mean we'll be late yeah missing the train means we'll be late a higher salary means more responsibility not always a higher salary higher hi no forget about that GH there a higher salary means more responsibility right ask me does a higher salary mean more responsibility yeah a higher salary means more responsibility naturally right in a in a logical world all right uh the next one is to have importance or significance to have importance or significance so this gift means a lot to me this means it's that gesture meant a lot to me noos right that we use this a lot hey man that those words you said before man they meant a lot to me so let's look at it in context this gift this gift or this present means a lot to me it means a lot to me does it mean a lot to you oh yeah it means a lot to me it would mean a lot to me if you studied often it would mean a lot to me if you if you did that so if something means a lot to you another example winning the competition meant everything to her sign winning the competition right so winning the competition meant everything to her can you turn it into a question for me did winning the competition mean everything to her right if I say you mean the world to me see if you mean a lot to me if it means the world to me is important my daughter means the world to me right so my daughter means the world to me she means a lot to me do you know what I mean this is like a pet word you know what I mean you know what I mean um like well um know what I mean you know what I mean he's like know what I mean know what I mean so know what I mean whoa we use it a lot and sometimes we don't even mean do you know what I mean right and the next one is to intend or to plan I meant to call you yesterday I didn't I meant to was my plan my intention to do so right I meant to call you earlier ask me did you no did you did you mean to call me earlier no I didn't mean to call you I pocket dialed you right so there's intention there to pocket dial toas do you remember this one from our episode on phones so I didn't mean to call call you earlier I pocket dialed you right I meant to call you in the afternoon I was planning to do something okay the next example is they mean to start the project next week in they mean to start the project next week all right let's take a look at some examples a couple more examples and then we're going to look at a very common phrasal verb that means mean okay you heard me signif signif but we'll look at that in just a moment let's just make sure you got these and let's look at in in the present we've already looked at a couple but you should have these perfectly all right I mean what I say I mean what I say that would be the translation no no no I meant what I said before Ino and there's a song I love Cat Stevens oh I can't keep it in I can't keep it in I gotta let it out and he goes you gotta mean what you say say what you mean sing think I forget the rest but it's a great line mean what you say and say what you mean so the it's a great expression and a beautiful positive song it's called can't keep it in by Cat Stevens remember in the bonus part we'll take a look at other examples of this in music and movies along with phrasal verbs idiomatic expressions and a test so so I mean what I say do you mean what you Sayo do you mean what you say yes I mean what I say I always mean what I say if not I won't say it the next one the past tense she meant she meant to finish her homework last night she meant to finish her homework last night you say it she meant to she meant to finish her homework last night her ask me did she did she mean to finish her homework last night yeah she meant to finish her homework last night right and the last one we'll look at it in the future this will mean more work for everyone this will mean this will this will this will mean more work for everyone ask me will this mean more work for everyone oh yeah this will mean more work for everyone and the phrasal verb I wanted to show you before we wrap up this first part here is stand for Let's test you what does fomo stand foris I know we've looked at it you got you got to answer using a full sentence stand for so what does fomo stand for fomo stands for stand for so fomo stands for fear of missing out and what about Joo what does Joo stand for Joo stands for the joy of missing out that's more my situation right all right another one stand for what does pus stand for we looked at this in the Trump episode what does pus stand fora pus or it stands for president of the United States of America pus POTUS if you look at his Twitter handle it's pus right pus so so we've got a lot of those the best way to practice it and practice them right what does Reem stand forem stands for rapid eye movement this way you can practice the stands for and you can practice these very common things what does ICU stand for I hope you're answering these no no e what does ICU stand for IC U stands for Intensive Care Unit Lai so it's a great exercise to practice stand for and to practice very common fomos [ __ ] all these you know we love our abbreviations in English we love our acronyms they drive us crazy all right let's look at some synonyms and antonyms and then we've got to get going and I hope you guys will join us in the bonus episode we are going to have tons of fun singing looking at movies and testing you to make sure you really got it some synonyms for mean are to imply what are you trying to imply what are you implying what do you mean out what do you mean sounds much much more natural right what do you mean not what do you what are you remember what you what are you implying what do you mean the next one intend it's a regular verb I intend ended to do this my intention was right to lead to to mean that one right this leads to more work for everybody I know we've looked at this one and this led to the Great Depression in many episodes you should be familiar with that one the next one aim I mean to do this I aim to do this right aim and the next one matter you matter to me you mean a lot to me you mean the world to me you matter so see this way we just look at other words that you will see that have to do with these words and well words that are also very common such as our antonym our first antonym is hide hide is a great word to know hidden hide every day I hide yesterday I I hid and lately I've hidden nice just be careful you don't say lately I've hidden the next one to conceal ladies if you wear makeup a concealer noi it's not my territory to prevent something also to avoid something and the other one is the last one to be trivial right it means nothing now this is Trivial it's insignificante balavi I think is the word you use it's trivial it's Petty so wow some really good synonyms and antonyms my Amigos well that's the end of the first part I sure hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of this week's FY I[Music][Applause][Music]
