at that so but I also love plays on Words we're always doing plays on words here another way to say a play play on words is a pun all right p n a pun a play on word So today we're going to play with Interstellar students the ones that are in class with me on a weekly basis that's Adrian Garmin L Issa bako David Jos Maria and Edgar keep up the great work all of you all right let's play around with play who get the baan right to play around let's play around with play it's a regular verb so that means it ends in Ed every day I play yesterday I played I play it or I played it I play I play it no no I played it right these are patterns you should know at this stage in the game especially if you're following all the episodes so you got to make sure we got to know that final sound so later we can connect it to our other words so I played it did you play it did you yeah I played it so that's that D sound and lately I've right yesterday I played lately I've played I think so I would say so so that's the pronunciation stuff we already looked at it as a noun oh nice play buug also we saw a very entertaining play over and we also looked at a play on words a pun but let's look at the core meanings of this very useful verb the first one to engage in a game or sport did you say esport or sport gu a game no I Wile so that's the key put them together so say it with me to engage in a game or sport or sport you're just putting it right you're you you just you know like it's a train and you got to connect all those those little pieces let's take a look at this I think it's the most common usage they like to do I say to or to they like to play soccer every weekend I don't say football I'm not from England they like to play soccer every weekend ask me do they like to play soccer every weekend do they do they like to play soccer every weekend does he does he does he play soccer every weekend no he plays every other weekend are you following along I hope so because that first example just gave us four or five different translations say them aloud the next one do you wanna do you want to do you wanna do you wanna do you w to play chess with me do you want to that's it just okay I see do you want to play chess with me do you want to so again that's the the jingle does he do you wna do we have to once you know those you just got to pop in the right verb at the end or the right noun see us so do you want to play chess with me tell me no I don't want to play chess with you cuz you always cheat okay why don't you why don't you why don't you want to play chess with me why don't you want to play chess with me I never cheat yeah that's not true man you are a cheater you are always cheating whether we play chess or Checkers Checkers all right uh another one to perform music or a musical instrument Toco I had somebody tell me once I touched the guitar I go oh good great maybe one day you'll play it no no is to play do you play do you play any instruments instrument do you do you play any instruments let's take a look at some other examples she can play the piano beautifully I didn't say she can play the piano n she can she can play the piano beautifully she can play she can she can't play the OBO she can play the piano she can't play the OBO and can't right she can play the piano she can she can she can play the piano she can't play the Sachs right the next one the band is playing at the concert tonight the bands Loos the bands playing at the concert tonight ask me is the band playing at the concert tonight are they are they playing is the band playing is it right that that's the the difference they have to match in the sentence right uh what else the band oh let's see if you remember this from we've looked at a lot of concert episodes and musical episodes how do you say you remember it who's the opening B band or who's opening for them so who's the opening band or who's opening for them oh um John Lennon Well yeah know Paul McCartney's opening for them now that's weird but again it's just an example all right also to act in a theatrical production or role I don't know why I just went into my shakesperian down here to perform a part or character in a play a movie or other form of drama although the British don't say movie they say film movie is very American yes let's take a look in my normal accent he was chosen M was I didn't say he was chosen no emphasis he was he was it's not really an important word to tell the story there right so it's just helping the other verb so think about that you know no right in the grand scheme of things the grand scheme of things so he was he was chosen this is a throwaway word Lan he was chosen to play Hamlet in the upcoming play ask me was he was he was he chosen to play Hamlet in the upcoming play all right let's see do you remember how to say all right easy Hamlet hey it's good to review all this stuff that we that we've looked at in other episodes as well reviewing is key to language learning to any learning I think all right uh the next example of playing a a theatrical role she played the lead character in the movie she played right she played she played she played the lead does he you can say does he buto you just say does he so um she played the lead character in the movie ask me did she did she play the lead character in the movie yeah de makeo no she didn't play the lead character in the movie she didn't ask me why why didn't she play the lead character in the movie well because she didn't audition you have to audition if you want to play the lead role or the lead character okay there's another usage of play and then we've got to move or manipulate something in a spe in a specific way excuse me so the child likes to play with building blocks building blocks or right to make towers and things the child or the kid child children kids so the kid likes to likes to the kid likes to play with building blocks can you ask me does the kid like to play with building blocks does he does she does he like to play with building blocks no no he doesn't like to play with building blocks Nas is that how you say it he likes to play with marbles I guess he must be losing his marbles did you get it to go crazy we looked at all this vocabulary in the classic games episode if you feel like feeling a little Nostalgia that's the episode for you all right and the last example uh stop playing with your food and eat it right right stop playing your with your food and eat it okay and is there another way we could say this okay stop playing or quit quit playing with your food playing or playing quit playing with your food stop playing with your food and eat it Chow Down salimos I don't remember Maybe in one of the cooking episodes another usage to operate or use electronic media un a player a player but also a player a CD player an MP3 player well that's unor right so it plays naturally Le it plays the files or whatever it's meant to play so let's take a look at some examples could you did I say could you no too much could you you know they going they go could you could you play that song again could you please I love it could you play that song again for me um I'm sorry I can't play it again I can't yeah I can play it again I can't play it I can play it again that can and can't we've looked at that concept many many times but it's really good and important I should say to have it down pth another example they played the movie on the big screen the big screen or the Silver Screen as we looked at in our Hollywood episode did they ask it go ahead you know what to do did they play the movie on the big screen yeah there was a screening and a screening is when they get people together to watch a movie pre-screening is yeah so that's a good one to know what time is the screening they have a screening at screen the pantala right they have a screening at 7 p.m. the next one is to pretend or imitate remember pretended is different than pretend what are you trying to say um pretend is right so it's a false friend in English we've looked at a lot of false friends um a few months ago we looked at false friends I remember but that's one that always stands out right so to pretend or imitate let's look at the examples the children the did you say kids I hope you didn't say kids the kids right the kids the kids like to like to the kids like to play pretend and imagine they're Pirates they are there swaii let's say it together the kids like to pretend the kids like to play pretend and imagine they're Pirates ask me do they like to play pretend and imagine their Pirates yeah they love to play pretend we all love to play pretend the next one he was just playing around when he acted like a superhero playing around to play around we'll look at it in depth when we look at our phrasal verbs in the bonus episode uh the next one is to compete against someone this is a team what time does your favorite team play right oh they play tomorrow at 7 and again I'm sure you're familiar with many of these but it's good to look at the examples so here it goes our team now you can say our or R our team will play against the rivals next Saturday our team our you can say our team but I mean our team our team will be playing against the rivals next Saturday can you turn it into a question will our team will our team play against the rivals next Saturday oh yeah they'll play against the arch rivals the next one she always plays to win I think that's self-explanatory right she plays to win ask me does she play to win not play to Playa does she play to win yeah she always plays to win and the next usage is to take a risk careful with the pronunciation of that word to take a risk or a gamble okay and as always some examples he likes to he like to like to he likes he likes to he likes to play poker on weekends he likes to play poker on weekends ask me does he does he like to play poker on weekends make no no not him he doesn't like to play poker on weekends how do how would you say why doesn't he why doesn't he like to play poker on weekends well he's too tired to play poker on the weekends and the next one don't play with fire I think you're say you say the same thing you're playing with fire well we say don't play with fire you might get burned and that's an interesting word word because the word burned is both regular and irregular so you can say burnt or burned it's an interesting one that's a good trivia question is the verb um burn regular or irregular both so don't play with fire you might get burned or burnt all right the next usage is to act or behave in a particular way first example he decided to he decided to play it cool during the interview and to play it cool is yeah I'm fine to play it cool we've heard it in many songs and we'll take a look at it later on is he decided to play it cool during the interview now act like he's all right with everything it doesn't matter you know the next example she tried to play the role of The Peacemaker in the argument The Peacemaker person K right she tried to play the role of The Peacemaker in the argument okay so she tried to make them make up we say the same expression as you guys to bury the hatchet bury the hatchet but we also say make up we looked at that in the make and do episode so she tried to play the role of The Peacemaker in the argument can you turn it into a question for me did she did she try to play the role of The Peacemaker in the argument oh yeah she always tries to play the role of The Peacemaker but also they're always is fighting I guess they have to stop playing around and we'll look at it again in the bonus part some more meanings the last meaning to have an effect or influence okay and some examples luck often plays a part in success it's a good good one for me to learn in Spanish do hey you guys can help me in class luck often plays A Part success right it plays a part in something another example emotions can play tricks on you when you're tired to play My Mind is Playing Tricks on Me to play tricks on which we'll look at more in depth in the bonus episode when we play with this word even more so that happens yeah when you're exhausted your emotions or your mind can play tricks on you all right my Amigos those are your primary meanings let's look at some synonyms and some antonyms and then we'll get going and then in the bonus part we'll look at the phrasal verbs we'll look at idiomatic expressions we'll look at pop culture and then we'll see if you guys want to play along hug Migo when we do our translation test but if you want access to that the PDFs the classes it's all on patreon.com Alberto Alonso some synonyms for play to compete right this is in the sports meaning we competed let's if there uh verbs which they will be verbs will conjugate them to practice we competed last week the competition the next one perform she played the role she performed the role performance right it's a it's also to her performance you you haven't been performing well in class lately so it's not just like performing on stage but your performance right the next one to portray he portrayed Ebenezer Scrooge okay to portray means to the word portrait is r r so R whoa I love when words are linked like that the next one to Tinker who get the ad I think of like a mad scientist or an inventor here what is he doing ah he's in his office tinkering to Tinker it was called Tinker Toys so makes all the sense in the world and the last one fiddle right but stop fiddling with your zipper stop fiddling with it or you're gonna break it right to fiddle to play second fiddle is I'm not going to play second fiddle to him okay no way I said seon might be a good translation sem anonyms for play to abstain now this one is used with the preposition uh sir it's mu form sir please abstain from smoking okay abst I think you this one is very Latin right to Forfeit to Forfeit you see it sometimes if a if something happens a team will forfeit a game it's a false friend because I know for you for fight is a lift pass a ski pass but for us forfeit is to to well we forfeit we're not going to participate the next one to drop out we looked at that one with Steve Jobs right he dropped out of college he was a Dropout right a college drop out and we've got to pause right if you're not playing you're paused we're pausing and the last one is to concede this is We Know It with in Spanish con you say the same word he conceded the victory to concede so there you go my Amigos that is play I hope you'll play with us more in the bonus episode of this week's FY I
