welcome to season 8 of FYI this season instead of tackling topics we'll discover the most common verbs in the English language sit back and relax but you'd better sit up when we do our translation test on this week's episode of f Yi welcome to for your info English you got it got it hello hello hello FY welcome welcome welcome welcome it's another informative educational exciting episode of FYI so sit back as I said in the intro sit back this is a very logic iCal phrasal verb sit back right we also use the word recline but you would never say to somebody recline no you would say sit back which also means relax think about it when I get home from work I like to sit back and relax so sit back and relax as I said in the intro but don't relax too much I'm going to make sure you're on your toes and that you're repeating the different structures with me aloud because remember this I don't have to practice my English it's you guys so practice these key structures these key essential verbs that we're looking at every week and all the additional stuff because we're not just going to look at the verb sit today a lot of other vocabulary is going to come up idiomatic expressions so we can always expect a good time and to learn a lot as well and I just want to remind you there's a bonus episode that's available every week you can get a bonus episode if you're in my community and that bonus episode is chalk full of more interesting useful content we look at phrasal verbs we look at idiomatic expressions we look at said verb in pop culture and then the moment of truth is when I put you to the Tex and as I said in the intro you'd better sit up when I put you to the test you'd better be you had better so you better you better you had better you better okay but I said it just so you see it you'd better sit up and this in Spanish you say incorporate so it's the opposite of sitting back sit back means relax sit up means pay attention it means literally come closer because I want to tell you something I want to teach you something or I want to put you to the test as is this case now if you want access to that bonus episode if you want to get PDF documents literally the ones that I'm looking at where you can take notes as well usually they're between seven to 10 pages and chalk full of everything we look at in both episodes and aside from that you can even get a master class with me every month you can get a weekly class with me and join our amazing group of interstellar students who are with me on a weekly basis learning the ins and outs of the language not just reviewing the these episodes so if you want more information on how you can become a member of my Curious Community go to patreon.com Alberto Alonso and join us and I want to send a shout out to all my patrons especially my Interstellar students the ones who are in class with me give it up for Adrian Carmen lenina Issa Paco David J Maria and Edgar what are you waiting for that's my question AAS what are you waiting for join us and explore English don't learn English explore English I always tell my students you're not English students you're English explorers doesn't that sound better it sounds almost magical mystical all right let's take a look at this verb to sit we already looked at sit back we already looked at sit up in the literal sense and in the figurative sense so how do we conjugate the verb is it regular or irregular it's an irregular verb because regular verbs end in ed so it's every day your turn every day I sit back and relax after work okay know go and sit back and rock and roll rock Guns and Roses it's a and you see hey you could take some Clues from the way we write things right so every day I sit back and relax yesterday yesterday I sat back and relaxed and lately lately I've sat back and relax so it's sit sat sat but it almost like a okay give it to me with your brother lately my brothers yeah you can say my brother has but why if you can contract it lately my brothers sat back and relaxed and is n so remember anytime you hear something like that or anytime I'm pointing out like a a pron iation thing that's your cueist to say it aloud to practice it to make sure you're getting those nuances because life is all about nuances and those of you who participate every week I know who you are because I'm watching you improve in front of my very eyes in class and I'm proud you're not just sitting back and being passive sit back no you guys are not sitting back all right so let's take a look at some other things let's look at the definition now that we saw that it's an irregular ver oh very important it's an irregular verb I think this is even more important here how do you pronounce it in did you say seat it's not seat please seat no no no no no no no no no sit sit down sit down sit down sit down right now I saw the the brand SE when I was a kid I was like oh it's a good name for a car seat no I'm not making that up I'm serious I was like oh see good and then someone said I'm like SE I've never heard of that brand okay okay so seat sit let's let's say them together sit down in the seat sit down Sit no seat sit down in the seat all right I wanted to get that out of the way before I forget because that is probably one of the biggest pronunciation problems with this verb oh he was sat next to me he was sat he was seated next to me okay s so they're both correct just a personal preference there so the verb to sit did you say seat or sit okay the verb sit generally means to rest one's will wait to rest this dis on the buttocks buttocks even but buttocks or thighs we're going over parts of the body remember there's an FYI episode on the parts of the body and thighs are musos so let me start over it's to rest one's weight on the buttocks or thighs typically while resting on a surface such as a chair or a bench or you can sit on the ground in the grass right careful with the pronunciation of the word surface no surface surface s fist surface all right well let's look at the different uses and more importantly let's put them in context and see how they sound together the first one is to rest on a surface okay do you know how to say Restless right if somebody is restless all right so sit means to place yourself in a seated position on a chair seat bench or other surface surface let's take a look at it please sit down the meeting will begin shortly bu I'll be with you shortly right I know everybody knows in a little bit in a moment but shortly sis the cracks so please sit down the meeting will begin shortly ask me will the meeting begin shortly will the meeting or will it will it begin shortly yeah it'll begin in around 15 minutes okay it'll it'll is it willo will all right the meeting will begin how do we say how would we say I'm going to call a meeting I'm going to call a meeting meeting and what about I love that you call it celebrate we're going to celebrate a meeting we're going to hold a meeting right so first you call the meeting and then the meeting will be held in conference room B and you know what we've done so many verbs that I can't remember if we've done the verb to hold well I'm going to write it down because I have a long list of verbs and uh I want to make sure I don't miss those juicy ones noich as we say all right let's move on to to remain in a specific position okay so let's take a look at it the cat sat on the window sill all afternoon okay the cat sat hey I'm a poet and I didn't even know it the cat sat on the window sill the window sill is the part of the window you know where that's flat okay it's a surface obviously if the cat can sit on it so the cat sat on the window sill all afternoon ask me did the cat did the cat sat did the cat sit on the window sill all afternoon yeah yeah the cat always sits on the window sill all afternoon okay the next one to take a position of Authority or responsibility okay so it's like in a jury a committee maybe if you're a member of a committee you say Comm we say committee committee but committee okay committee if you're British it's committee if you're American he sits on the committee that means he's a part of the committee he holds a position let's take a look at the example she will sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project upcoming okay okay the upcoming I think I've even heard Ben is that a word or am I making that up all right well she will sit Kim me you know me come on we know each other pretty well by now she'll she will she'll sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project okay The Advisory board right it comes from the verb to advise to give advice okay don't mix them up to advise is the verb and advice is the noun and we never say advices right Jos Maria hey well we've looked at that I always like to give my students a wink or a nod a win in the figurative sense and a right so hey but how do we learn from our mistakes our mistakes are blessings hallu hallu hallu all right all right let's see so she'll sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project ask me will she will she sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project oh yeah de make know she won't she won't sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project ask me why not why won't she why won't she NE why won't she sit on The Advisory board for the upcoming project I don't know why she won't okay the next one to be situated no situated sit situated or located I remember a friend when we went snowboarding he said what's your ubication I'm like no I'm like get out of here ubication my location you guys say no so just think of it that way Mund right so there another way we can associate things when we remember them or when we come across them so that we can remember them okay so to be situated or located all right the house sits on top of the hill overlooking the valley the house sits on top of the hill overlooking the valley on top of the on top of the the house sits on top of the hill overlooking the valley ask me does it does it sit no sits right does does it sit on top of the hill yeah it sits on top of the hill Hill overlooking the valley did you say ballet it's Valley say it with me I love those V's because they vibrate they tickle you goas very Lively Village in Bavaria in the valley I live bamos I live in a very Lively Village in Bavaria in a valley give yourself a round of applause all right all right the next one to undergo a formal examination okay to undergo I think in Spanish is and let's conjugate that verb every day I undergo tests yes yesterday your turn yesterday I underwent tests right go go and lately I've undergone tests lately I've undergone tests all right so he sat his final exams last month so you can sit an exam that means to take it's another way of saying to take an exam okay and it's funny when I was a kid the exams were called the SATs those were the ones that determined your score to get into college or university so theats so he sat his SATs last month ask me did he did he sit did he sit his final exams last month you know the last month last month AAS did he did he sit them yeah he sat them and how did he do how did he do how did he do well he did great he passed with flying colors he aced it all right uh the next one to function no function function or operate temporarily in a place okay so let's take a look at it I think you've heard this one no I know you've heard this one babysitter baby I hope not did you know we also have cat sitters or dog sitters well if a babysitter takes care of your baby what does a dog sitter do take care of your dog what does a house sitter do take care of your house while you're away your plants so that word sitter and sitting I'm house sitting this weekend I'm cat sitting this weekend babysitting okay there's more let's take a look at it can you sit with the children while I run some errands can you Kenya Kenya visit Kenya next year I never realized they were homophones so can you sit with the children while I run some errands okay remember this one to run errands I'm sure we looked at it in the Run episode right so can you sit with the children or Mason babysit the children okay as we said house sitting cat sitting we've got a lot of different sitting out there all right and the last one is to stay quiet and let's not get mixed up because before we talked about Restless in so how would I tell you then would I say be quiet nope no I wouldn't say be quiet if you're not speaking maybe you're just moving around I would say be still stay still stay still right so don't mix those up because quiet is Soso I think I told you guys about this really funny story my friend Roberto Le he's a very famous guy in Spain and he's a really good dude and he was running a marathon I don't remember where maybe it was Greece but either way the language everybody was speaking was as you can probably guess English and he was right by the finish line and he saw a guy on the ground and you know he said well let me go over the guy and see if he's okay and he wanted to tell him right and so it was really funny because he told the guy be quiet be quiet be quiet be Qui and the poor guy is like Jesus Christ I'm injured and this guy's telling me to be quiet so needless to say Roberto put his foot in his mouth but how do we learn we learn by putting our foot in our mouth that's how we learn as I always tell you mistakes are blessings they're blessings in Disguise Theos blessings in Disguise it's similar to the no there's always a silver lining if you look hard enough so to stay quiet or to remain idle I think idle when we say when we talk about a car in Spanish you would say idle right it's just it's not moving it's just sitting there if a person is Idol he hasn't worked in eight years he's not interested in you know he's not he's Idol right and it sounds exactly like Idol idosos it's a shame that my idol is so Idol hey you gotta play with words maybe you know how to pronounce idolo Idol Billy Idol my did you know this word I know we've looked at it on prior episodes my nogin is another way of saying mikoko it's a weird word n o gg i n all right let's look at this example and then we'll take a look at some synonyms and antonyms the project all right the project has been sitting on her desk for weeks okay that means makes sense right okay the project has been now what can we do there can we contract that of course the project been sitting has been the projects apost the projects the projects been sitting on her desk for weeks ask me all right has the project been sitting on her desk for weeks yeah it's been it has beenos it's been sitting on her desk for weeks that was a really tough one so good job if you got it let's take a look at some synonyms for the verb to sit before we split to split maros hey there's another good word we can look at s DVD rpet I'm going to write that word down there maybe split might be seen in a future episode all right so some synonyms take a seat have a seat no so I can tell you sit sit down or take a seat or have a seat another one to plop down now this one sounds this one is the way it sounds plop no I said plop right so he plopped down on the sofa okay to plop down it's really easy because it's anomic so I'm sure you knew take a seat and have a seat but I'm pretty sure you didn't know to plop down all right the next one take a load off think about it take a load off man take a load off so as we see and we'll see with the phrasal verbs in the bonus part there are a lot of things that have to do with uh you know relaxing with taking it easy okay so to take a load off and then the next one is to squat and now is when I know who goes to the gym or G squats is yes no I think you say in Spanish so to squat well it's not really sitting and it's not really standing you're squatting okay also to squ squat is to live in a place illegally I think you say okupas he's a squatter and he's been squatting for years right Mak sense if you can make it make sense doesn't always make as much sense as I like to make it seem but again you're the one that's got to remember it so whatever works for you whatever works for you and now some antonyms for sit to fidget remember I told you before I'm Restless I've got ants in my pants so you well I fidget to fidget no you're sitting in your chair and you're up you're down you can't sit still my daughter fidgets and the adjective is fidgety fidgety if somebody's Restless they're fidgety sometimes it's because somebody is nervous another antonym stand of course if you're not sitting you're standing stand every day I stand yesterday I stood and lately I've stood did you get it right good good the next one leave well I'm going to sit well I'm not going to sit I'm G to leave me Maro and every day I leave yesterday I left and lately I've left all right the next one to lie down so we already looked at stand to lie down tar and the last one which I brought up at the beginning to describe myself to be restless Ino well my Amigos we have reached the end of the first part but I hope you'll join us in the bonus episode of this week's FY I
