[Music][Applause] hello hello hello welcome welcome fyers welcome to your October master class and let me remind you remind and remember first right let me remind you remember is something you do by yourself reminding takes an external source so write this down Okay remind me to tell you it's remind me to tell you remind me to call her the next one is you remind me of remind me of talosa no this city reminds me of Rome so you've got remind me to bbo and you've got it reminds me of okay and then the other one is remember I remember when I was a kid that reminds me of when I was a kid you see what I mean reminding comes from an external Source just be careful that you don't make mistakes when it comes to the structure so you've got two with remind remind me to aun write this stuff down this is key stuff it's a a very very common mistake so remind me to tell you something later you remind me of another student of mine and remember as I remember do you remember when you were a kid it's something you do on your own the reason I tell you is because I've had students say Alberto remember me and I'm like don't worry I know that's not what they wanted to say they want to say remind me that so careful with those words that's not our lesson today but well since I use the word remind I figured we could go over that concept I know you know it on paper the idea is to be able to know it all the time and not just on paper but know the way it sounds so when you say it right it feels right when you say it wrong it feels wrong and that only comes with repetition with familiarity with just repeating it over and over so going back to what I was saying I'm here to remind you that you had some homework from last month's class last month's class we took a look at motivation you know uh study tips what to do what not to do as we say dos and don'ts and I hope you guys have started the year off with some good study habits because you can really really well we need to I think we live in a society now where we have to make the most of our time constantly so my Amigos thanks for joining us I hope you brought a song for us I'll be checking your songs at the end of the class so you don't have to give us the whole song but here's what I want and you can leave it in the comments um the song to take its toll by Maroon Five uh is by fur you know so so tell you can tell us the song and an idiomatic expression that you learned from it right um there's one Katie Perry Roar it's a great one now I I I know a lot of them because I'm always paying attention to this stuff I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath de now I know you know bite your tongue bite bit bitten qu no biting okay I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath to bite your tongue easy okay but to hold your breath that's an expression okay it literally means but it also means it would be the translation of Spanish of es I used to bite my tongue and hold my breath so that's just one line of the song the first line of the song Roar you can even learn there it's an anomic word Roar excuse me but we don't only use it with Lions we use it the Roar of the crowd El rido so I'm not even a Katy Perry fan but we can learn from ktie Perry songs we can learn from all kinds of songs and we're going to check that at the end of today's class so leave us a comment with a song and maybe a phrasal verb or an idiomatic expression that you learn from it and as always I have an Arsenal now if you're watching this class and you're listening to this class and you're not on patreon well it's because I sent you the link for some specific reason but remember if you want to be in this class every month you have to join us over on patreon.com Alberto Alonso those of you who are on patreon great job you guys are learning every week with me week after week month after month and I want to tell you what's coming up too what you can expect now in November so we just took a look at the verb think this week we're looking at the verb think then we're going to look at run then we're going to look at put then we're going to look at give after that turn then sell and then ask and then we'll be taking our Christmas break so we've got some really useful verbs coming up in the coming season and uh in the coming month and again if you want to get so much more than just one episode every week the one that comes out on Friday but if you want to get a bonus episode if you want to get the PDF documents very very useful for Your Arsenal right hey the you got to be armed to the teeth right with content if you're a student well the more you have the better now the content is only useful if you look at it if you use it if you repeat the different structures every week aloud something I always tell you guys to do to repeat the structures aloud and Interstellar students you guys you're in class with me every week so I hold you accountable for your mistakes and um and I'll see you this week I'll see you this coming Monday in our review class also Interstellar students I sent you the PDFs the documents for this class already if you're on patreon and it's in your level well you'll also get them I'll attach everything we're going to look at today I'm going to attach in documents but if you want that you've got to go to patreon.com Alberto Alonso and you can join for free which it's kind of limited what you get but the lowest paying level is five and then the next one up uh the the the highest one is77 EUR a month now you'll get a a lot lot of there a wide range of things but let's put it this way if you're in the interstellar students level you get it all you get the gamut and also if you sign up now remember I've been doing this community for four freaking years four years now and that's thanks to you guys but that also means that also means that you guys have a plethora a wealth abania of content over 2,000 posts the moment you sign up so my Amigos if you're not on patreon check it out because there's so much more all right anything else I wanted to get out of the way I wanted to tell you about the upcoming episodes I wanted to remind you about your homework remind you to comment remind you to right we said or I just give you another one to remind you about well today we're going to look at another word like that because in Spanish it's the same word well today we're going to look at wait for expect and hope and that's the same word in Spanish ESP but in English it's not but first we're going to warm up with some tongue twisters all right now if you're in the interstellar level you have access to these documents right now and you can open them up and you can take a look and um and if not you will have them afterwards to practice but I decided to take a look at the big ones the the the tongue twisters you need to know the those yeah thank you thank you that's right so we're going to look at some tongue twisters then we're going to look at to wait to Hope and to expect and then we're going to wrap up with a song that uses hope and expect it's a song from Greece and by the way we have an FYI episode on this icon of a movie right this this classic movie this classic musical grease so we're going to end the class as always with a song because I think it's always a good way to go out with a bag to go out with a bang is right with fireworks hey if you visualize it it helps you remember the idiomatic expressions so always I mean don't underestimate the power of visualization of seeing it all right Amigos all right so the first tongue twister now all of these kind of have a oneliner and then they've got the long version so today I think we're just going to focus I'm going to give you all of the content but really we're going to focus on the oneliner you know the the succinct the concise version Oh and by the way I'm sure some of you have noticed I mean I already sneezed um I'm a little under the weather I feel fine I don't have a fever I'm just a little stuffed up no not constipated remember we looked at false friends last month constipated is esto and I don't think I've ever been constipated in my life I know I know TMI too much information oh man and then now I went too far I overdid it to overdo it with that sound effect well I'm just making sure you guys are paying attention and that you're on your toes cuz these tongue twisters although they're very fun they're not easy even for a native speaker it's not easy okay so here's your first one it's about witches and watches witches and watches repeat after me because obviously uh that's the whole idea to practice making these sounds so if two witches no wiches I know know that a lot of times Spanish people say she's a Wich it's not Wich you know how I know that cuz my wife my daughter corrected her the other day she goes mommy it's not wi it's which so and which which which is your favorite which which which is your favorite so here we go if two witches did you say wiches or did you say witches that's if you said[Applause] witches if two witches would watch two watches okay those if two witches would watch two watches which which which which would watch which watch all right so now you visualized it right you got it in your head okay now we've got it all in there let's put it together we don't have to go fast we can get faster and faster but the idea is just to get through it once and pronouncing it right not saying we or anything like that okay so if no IFA you guys overuse it in English uh and I know it but hey we all have our our things but that's one of the Spanish pronunciation things the overuse of that e eat e no it's it's it's not eat e it's never eat e ever so forget eat e eat is right we never say eat e no you'll never hear a native speaker say e it's it's interesting it's fascinating it's amazing all right so if I speak no I speak Spanish so if you can work on those two right sh and Sheet you don't want to mix those up because if you tell somebody I have a[ __ ] maybe they're not going to want to be your friend no big deal so if two witches would watch two watches which which would watch which watch all right let me see if I can put it here in the comments the good thing is um I've got okay yeah this one fits so you've got it over there follow along with me if not again you're going to have this on patreon you're going to have all the stuff we're going to look at okay just so you have it as a reference and you can add it to your Arsenal so again here we go together if two witches would watch two watches which wit would watch which watch whoa all right all right let's do my favorite one and this one I always play with my wife with this one again in the document you're going to see the long version but we're just going to practice the short version since there's a short version this is my personal favorite one because a lot of students mispronounce wood right they say good I good go it's not good good is Bueno it's wood right I would buy wood but I don't have any money no so that's where that one comes no it's wool right Edgar and it's not good right Jos Maria hey I'm using their names but I've heard that mistake way before I met them so if these are the big ones this is why we attack here if we can really attack those big mistakes well then you know we'll get you sounding great and feeling confident that's the other thing too if you sound great you feel great when you're speaking and there's nothing I I see it every week on the question of the week on my radio show there is is nothing like a student who exudes confidence whether they make a mistake or two whether they trip up or stutter because they're nervous there's nothing like confidence okay there's you know saying it just okay but I'm GNA believe it and if you make a mistake well you know you'll know instantly by the person's face right I'm sorry just my goodness all right so again we need to visual ize this the first part is how much W Quant M how much W would a wood chuck chuck now a wood chuck is mar and to Chuck Isa right to that's why they're called wood Chucks right okay so how much wood would a wood Chu Ro maybe I think would be the word Mar how much wood would a wood chuck chuck if if a woodchuck could chuck wood what rapid how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood oh my goodness I've been hearing these since I was a kid but this can really help you with that W sound right how much w so how much W ready how much wood would a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck it's could right and the answer he would chuck he would as much as he could and Chuck as much wood as a woodchuck W if a wood chuck could chuck W this but again the ones we all know by heart a Memoria or the the first lines okay so again let's try let's speed it up because it helps doesn't make any sense but if you make it makes sense then you're like okay that's how I do the that's how I do the I'm thinking sad I'm see in every part in my head all right so how much wood would a woodchuck chuck how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck would did you say it great job all right all right the next one is to practice the sound between the S and the sh I've heard a lot of people say I'm I'm s I'm s no I'm sure I'm sure he's coming so a lot of times they say he's going to take a sour you guys gotta really that's the sound Wu situation wooduck right but it's to practice these important sounds let's practice right she sells so she right here we go she sells she shells by the sea shore whoa all right this is probably the shortest one all right try it with me she sells right she sells she sells seashells by the seashore one more time she sells sea shells by the seashore now I'm going to up the ante here can you turn it into a question go ahead does she sell does she sell bendy does she sell seashells by the seashore did you get that right not easy all right we'll do one more even though you've got a couple more here I've given you the classics over here we'll do one more and then we're going to get into our exercise on Hope wait and expect and the next one is Betty B B though b o Betty B bought some butter say it Betty B bought some butter now are you ready I don't know it by heart right it's aive Betty butter bought some butter Betty bought some butter bety b b and you can practice them with different accents right she sells seashells by the seashore where I would say she sells seashells by the seashore heed sh sh well you're always playing with Sounds here right in the end you know language is a musical thing so Betty B okay Betty B bought some butter but she said this Butter's bitter if I bake this bitter butter it would make my batter MIM Masa bitter but a bit of better butter that would make my batter better she bought a bit of butter better than her bitter butter and she baked it in her batter and the batter was not bitter so TW Betty better oh okay so TW was better Betty B bought a bit of better butter whoa again this is just to practice I don't expect you to know them perfectly but that's your homework your homework is to record yourself not the whole one you don't have to do the whole one record yourself saying one or two of these very popular wellknown um tongue twisters okay tongue twisters and we say that too that was a tongue twister it doesn't roll off your tongue Theos we could say in English we could say say that five times fast and another way we say it too we say that's a mouthful it's a mouthful so these are different ways to say that something we said sounds like a tongue twister all right Amigos all right so wait hope expect the translation I always give my students I'll give it to you now we'll see if you know it and this is going to prove to us if you've got it down pat give it to me in the comments okay we're going to take a look at other translations too but that's the one I want because it's got all three give it to me I I know some of you have done it in class but once you get it you've got it all right so to wait to wait is to stay in a place or delay an action right okay wait we're gonna wait a minute until something happens or someone arrives correct all right now the thing about weight is you don't want to learn it without four why wait me oh listen listen me no listen to me wait for me right because they go together like l l linging we're going to look at some grease later on the best way to really get it is to look at it in context as we always do in our FYI episodes and uh let's see let's see if you guys uh let's play with these here I I will I'll wait for you for or for I'll wait for you so wait for is wait for wait for me for so I'll wait for you at the hardware store the hardware store is I'll wait for you at the hardware store can you turn it into a question do it aloud will you wait for me will you wait for me at the hardware store now you can say in you can say at you can't say on I work in bodafone I work in santand well if you say I work in santand I'm I think the city so so you work at hey it's an important one that you'll probably come across in a job interview right so make sure those prepositions those are the key to knowing if somebody is totally native all right the next one we have to we have have to wait until the rain stops to continue our ball game okay ball game baseball so we have to wait until the rain stops to continue our ball game all right ask me do we have to do we have to do we have to wait until the rain stops yeah if not we're going to have to take a rain check this is a very useful one let's take a rain check okay so if I had to cancel the class today because I'm under the weather I would put guys we're going to take a rain check we're going to do a rain check and that means the and it comes from cancelling a game because of the rain and doing it at a different date as you guys know there are many idiomatic expressions that come from Sports and we've looked at them in the basketball episode in the baseball episode remember those are all on Apple iox you can get them wherever you get your podcasts another example of wait she waited patiently waited it's a it's a regular verb right I didn't look at that before important to look at how they conjugate because that's part of the pronunciation right so she waited patiently for the receptionist to call her name can you turn it into into a question did she wait patiently for the receptionist Forest fur did she wait patiently for the receptionist to call her name yeah she waited waited waited the next one hope this is to want something to happen right the the first one I always translated is there's nothing connected to I'm in the waiting room think of it like that like now hope is I hope they call me soon because I don't want to sit in the waiting room all day so this is a a wish a desire something that you really want to happen right let's look at some examples I hope you have a great vacation did I say you or yeah I hope you have a great vacation really I hope you have a wonderful vacation the next one he hopes to get the job he applied for the verb we use is to apply for a job right and what do you use well you send in a resume and some some companies have a job application that you need to fill out so again we're playing with words apply for but it's an application right we're not taking applications right now we had a lot of people applying for jobs so he hopes to T or to he hopes to get the job he applied for can you turn it into a question does he does he hope to get the job he applied for yeah he hopes to get the job he applied for right it's a wish and the last one we hope the weather improves by tomorrow to improve or to get better right we hope the weather gets better or improves by tomorrow all right and the last one expect okay and this is your think about about the word expectation I expectativa so it's to believe or anticipate that something is going to happen right and you've got it's pretty certain you know oh well I expect him at
7:00 why because he's always here at 7 o' right so it's based on past information that we can be pretty certain about this one okay I don't expect him to come for dinner well because he never does okay expected expected wanted needed is AUM students you have those columns to practice those that regular verb pronunciation that tends to be tough all right let's look at expect and see if these translations or what you were expecting I expect the flight to leave on time why well based on all the information I have it looks like it's going to happen it looks likely right likely probable so do you expect the flight to leave on time do you expect the flight to leave on time yeah I expect the flight to leave on time because the the flight arrived on time the plane that was coming and there's no traffic and I you know means Bas on everything I know I expect it right the next one she expects him M the him she expects him to call her back later tonight as B so obviously because he usually does or because he said he was going to we have prior information let's turn it into a question does she expect him to call her back later tonight does she does she expect him expect expect Tim like Tim Burton does she expect him to call her back back her to call her back later tonight yeah she expects him to call her back later tonight why because he always calls her before he goes to bed you know that's the way he does it he's predictable all right and the last one they expect to walk away with the trophy this year to walk away with yarel Garo they expect to walk away with the trophy this year why well their record is imp able right they've won many more games than they've lost or tied in let's turn it into a question okay to make sure we really got it so the the affirmative they expect to to or to they expect to walk away walk away they expect to walk away with the trophy this year do they do they expect to walk away with the trophy this year all right all right well folks let's look at some translations and again I'll be sharing this if you're on patreon you'll have access to these uh when I post the video so you'll have these you'll have the tongue twisters you'll have the explanation and then you'll have our song if you want to look it up it's hopelessly devoted to you again it's from Greece and it's Olivia Newton John and we're going to learn some really good vocabulary hopelessly hopelessly Sino right no espan think about it that word hope is espan right that second word we looked at in the Hope wait for expect so hopelessly devoted to you and devoted I think you you probably know what that means because in Spanish I'm hopelessly devoted to you beautiful song and we're going to get some really good phrasal verbs and expressions from it and we're going to see in it we're going to see uh I believe it has both does it have it says hope and wait for expect well what were you expecting all right let's let's see if you guys got these[Music] okay this we're we're screwed so I hope you know yeah not you I hope you know what you're doing you're you are your I hope you know what you're doing I hope you know what you're doing thanks folks I'll be here for comedy I hope you're not watching hun that's not true by the way I was just being stereotypical sorry okay who are you waiting for who are you what are you waiting for join us on patreon what are you waiting for what are you what are you who are you right are okay here's one okay I'm expecting a call in about 20 minutes I'm expecting a call in about 20 minutes are you guys playing along all right another one okay want a phrasal verb I hope everything comes out works out or turns out okay I hope everything turns out works out or I can't remember the other one I used okay okay I hope everything turns out okay I hope everything turns out okay okay the next one we were waiting for them wait for or F we were waiting for them until
3:00 no we got tired of waiting for them okay we got tired of waiting for them let's see if you can get what this one is not for the faint of heart Okay so I hope right I hope you're not expecting a baby don't you say expectante right I think so that one's an easy one if you're having a baby you're pregnant You're Expecting right because there's a lot of information that means that you know that that points to that baby's coming out it's pretty sure right all right couple more okay I wasn't waiting for[Music] you Peter I wasn't expecting you I wasn't expecting this okay uh let's see the next one I'm giving it to you on a silver platter as we say they were expecting more from you they were expecting more from you and this one wait for me wait up wait up SP wait up wait for me or wait up all right in I'm going to give you one more and then we're going to take a look at our song again you'll have these translations over on patreon we were expecting a lot more people we were expecting a lot more people all right guys practice these practice them and make sure you practice them aloud as we do always if not what are you practicing right if you're not practicing aloud what are you practicing all right Amigos let's check out our comments we've got some we've got some FYI with us here there's Dave David David good morning to you hope you're doing well David up in Catalonia hope you're having a lovely day David we missed you in class this week he says morning Pedro what's up Pedro hey I said your name before Pedro I don't remember what the translation was good morning to you Peter all right and Peter's also giving us a song with an awesome idiom Peter great job to cut a long story short and I wasn't familiar with the song I know the group the group is spand ballet remember we don't say ballet in English we say ballet Al Fran okay so to cut a long story short to cut a long story short to make a long story short excellent Pedro you'll never forget it cuz love the song music is such an awesome way to learn cuz it sticks with you forever all right let's see who else has got some songs for us um let's see David felda David says Don't You Want Me the Human League but you got to tell me what the thing is what's the concept we're learning what's the um maybe negative questions don't you want me baby don't you want want me oh well the pronunciation of don't you don't you wish your boyfriend was hot like me don't you don't you don't you don't you so maybe that's what you wanted to point out David I'm not sure I'm not uh I'm not 100% sure but it's a great song uh let's see David thelda says it's a pimpinella song but more in a pop Style[Applause] I love pimpinella gotta say I got to love him all right let's see Pedro Pedro says I hope the[Music] don't okay I hope they don't expect I wait for them Pedro good effort but that's not the one we're looking for does anybody know it let's see where are you J Maria I know you know this one you memorized it because you know I ask it every time we do this lesson and review these these very very important structures all right let's see there's Laura hey Laura got a little magic in the house and she says what to expect when you are expecting thing is a very famous book for First Time Moms oh I didn't know that it's a great name wow thanks Laura I love you know I love highlighting things in pop culture so great job awesome What to Expect When You're Expecting uh she says we're expecting a very big turnout wait a second a big turn out wow Laura on fire you want to take a stab at I know you'll be able to figure it out all right anybody else have a song for us before we take a look at today's song going once going twice there's Elena hey Elena bringing some magic too she says hi you didn't expect me huh of course I was expecting you of course Elena and Laura I don't know what I would do if you weren't here with us learning and laughing so great to have you on board all right Elena Laura I know you are super super students all right well in the meantime while you're thinking that through and if anybody wants to give us any songs now's the time we're going to look at hopelessly devoted to you now I'm going to share the lyrics but obviously if you're not in the interstellar level you didn't get them beforehand but you can Google it Google hopelessly devoted to you it's a beautiful love song from Greece and it's sung by Olivia Newton John all right let's see Elena I hope they don't expect me to wait for them yes also Laura wow ladies Elena and Laura I hope they don't expect me to wait for them no it's me I hope they don't expect me to wait for them so I hope they don't expect me to wait for them great job to the ladies all right here's our song of the day to go out with a bang the first line is guess mine is not the first heart broken okay guess mine okay I guess I guess mine is not the first heart broken okay I know you know the word heartbreak well I'm heart broken break broke broken my eyes are not the first to cry my eyes are not the first to cry I'm not the first to know and then the next one we got a great phrasal verb we've looked at it we looked at it in the get episode of FYI there's just no getting over you so there's just no there's just know getting over you right and to get over we don't only use for a relationship we use it with um as well like a difficult situation also a sickness I can't get over this freaking cold to get over makes sense and that's a very common phrasal verb right you'll get over it don't worry so there's just no getting over you I know I'm Just a Fool careful with this word I've heard a lot of people people pronounce the word full so okay the fool is full right the fool is full full okay so yo is full not fo so I know I'm just a fool who's willing to I'm willing to sit around and wait for you now sit around well sit around is not just sit around is you're just going to sit around[Music] no it's it means more than just liter sitting man college starts in one month and you're just sitting around you're Idol as we say so I know I'm just a fool who's willing to sit around and wait for you wait for wait for hopelessly in right wait for you not wait for wait for you okay but B baby can't you see there's nothing else for me to do I'm hopelessly devoted to you hopelessly we already said s I'm hopelessly devoted to you and then it goes but now there's nowhere to hide nowhere to hide since you pushed my love aside a great phrasal verb to push aside is you pushed my love aside okay to push don't push me aside I'm out of my head have you heard that one before can't get you out of my head but here it's a little bit different out of is out of get out of here out of out of so I'm out of my head I'm out of my mind I'm out of my head right the KY I can't get you out of my head okay then the chorus hopelessly devoted to you my head is is saying my heart is say my head is saying fool forget him my heart is saying don't let go don't let go let it go hold on to the end hold on okay hold on no so how many phrasal verbs in here it's great well that's why I chose the song also because it had hopelessly it had to wait for right and we've got an episode on this amazing phenomenon called Greece so my heart is saying don't let go hold on to the end a final that's what I intend to do I'm hold hopelessly devoted to you but now there's no way to hide there's no way there's nowhere there's no way there's no way to hide hide hid hidden hi hiden it's hidden okay hidden careful if I say it it's because again I've heard it a million times since you pushed my love aside yo I'm out of my head all right my Amigos wonderful job I've got to say you guys really knocked it out of the park today I want to thank you for joining us in our class remember you have homework for next month's class for November's master class I don't know the date yet but you'll know it as soon as we vote because uh your Interstellar students and the super duper students vote on which day out of the days I can that I'm available uh so we don't know the date of the November class but in November we're going to be taking a look at pronunciation okay we're going to take a look at some of the most common those syntaxes the watch the Ghana the ha the what you these things these rafaga as I call them so you're not
